I feel like you are overthinking this.

I seriously, seriously doubt a player would somehow take less money because another team didn't offer to trade for them.  That just doesn't make a lick of sense.  No team has reportedly offered 2 1st round picks for Chris Jones and yet is he looking to settle for less money?

Exactly. The idea that it had any bearing on what Brian Burns is seeking financially is lunacy.  

Players typically don't settle for less than they think they are worth.  Of course Brian Burns is going to push for a deal similar to what Nick Bosa is asking for, because he is the one other edge rusher seeking a contract.

But by not trading, he now has more leverage in knowing that Carolina views him as essential, if he didn't already. It was neutral at best but it absolutely could have reduced the potential to compromise, if not nudged a number up, given the clear roster-specific valuation.

I need to see the facts that support Burns is terrible against the run. A team giving up a lot of run plays doesnt fall on one player, it seems like people are just grasping at the notion that burns has been the cause of the problem.

Burns is considered a top tier pass rusher in the league, he will be paid as such.  He knows it, his agent knows it, and the Panthers know it.  Whether we refused a trade or not, Burns has the same value because he one of a few top tier pass rushers in the league and that is a premium spot in the NFL.  Once Bosa sets the market, Burns will sign

Why is this so hard to figure out?

The second we did that and it was known, it meant we were going to have to overpay to keep him, we lost ALL negotiating power.

He has us over a barrel, just pay the man because keeping him on an overpay is better than losing him for nothing (wouldn’t even get a comp pick as we’d be flush with cap room that we’d use on another FA).

The Panthers are definitely significantly low balling him.  If they wanted that Crosby type deal they should have extended him last offseason not after we went out and exceeded it.

Absolutely agree. Crosby has been a better player overall than Burns in their 4 years. Ahead of Burns in accolades and stats except a half sack less. With the way contracts go up each year, maybe a hair more than Crosby but that’s it.

Would have been nice if Hurney wasn’t a fug head and drafted Crosby, who we had in for a visit, to go along with Burns instead of Will Grier. Instead we took Grier first and Miller instead as Crosby was gone in between. I recall a few folks in here speaking highly of Crosby, a lot more than Grier and Miller.

Panthers aren't lowballing Burns at 23M a year.  

Reddick got 15 a year in a deal last year.  Von Miller got 20M a year in a deal last year.

I think a deal somewhere in the area of 5 years, 125 million (25 per year average) is fair for BB.

I used to get real upset about this stuff as a younger fan.  But, ultimately, i'm pro-player.  Burns has every right to maximize his earnings and he deserves to be paid.   I just hope they come to an agreement soon.

Didn't we once have a lot of money tied up in Peppers/Buckner/Jenkins? We need to be very careful with how much we give Burns. If we can't make it work for us, let him go. The team's future is more important than any one player (other than QB).
