Yeah people forget the average price goes up every year. Lamar, Herbert, and Hurts don’t “deserve” to get paid more than Mahomes, but they happen to be the most recent franchise QBs that signed new contracts.

Franchise QBs are harder to find than a very good pass rusher that is a liability against the run.

That’s not the point though. The average contract for most premium positions (LT, CB, WR, DE etc) will go up every year. The most recently signed players will have contracts that will look bloated until the next round of contracts are due. The growing salary cap causes this.
Hill, Adams, and AJ Brown are all top 5 WRs in pay this year because they were the more recently signed contracts amongst the top WRs. Jefferson and Chase will probably make even more when their contracts come due.

I get what you're saying. But that also means that the Lions should sign Goff to the highest NFL QB deal ever because that's just the way it is for premium positions. You have to take into account the actual skill level of the player. Goff isn't a Hurts, Lamar, Mahomes type level of QB just as Burns isn't the same level of player as Watts or Bosa.

Fitts fugged up by not taking the trade and then thinking he could get Burns at a reasonable contract. You have to know the value of the player based on what he was doing at that time. Burns is a very good edge rusher that's a liability in the run game. You have to know that at the time of the trade or you're going to have to be prepared to pay him as a premium all pro edge rusher.

Fitts fugged up. Now we have to pay the man. This has all the feels of another Hurney deal though, betting on the potential and not the actual production.

Fitterer is mismanaging this situation but if he makes that Burns trade with the Rams he's effectively submitted his resignation. 95% chance he's not here to even see the names called for those first rounders. No owner is going to give a GM who was involved in the Matt Rhule fiasco a free two seasons to wait around to see the results of a few lottery tickets that might not even be as valuable anymore when they are finally ready to be redeemed.

For 23M, he better get 15 sacks and not get taken out of the game on run plays by tight ends.

I think the problem is that he definitely will which is why I was ok with trading him. I feel like big money should go to 3 down players or at least they need to load up on the D Line to keep him effective.

Daniel Jones just made big money and he was an average QB for one year. As for Goff he signed a 4 year 134 million contract in 2020 and the Lions are working on an extension for him now. At the time that was a premium contract for a QB.
Burns just finished tied for 8 in the league for sacks with JJ Watt and Crosby. He is trending up and moving to his more natural position with the best DC he has worked with yet. Unfortunately he is going to demand some money. I’m just preparing people that most of these contacts will look bad until the market resets again and new contracts are given to premium pass rushers again. It’s the nature of the beast that is the growing salary cap.

As I've said all along, 2 firsts was an overpay for Burns. We should've done the deal. Now we get this. Fitt ain't it.

Those two 1st rounders would have probably both been top 5 picks as Kupp is seeing a specialist and Stafford's spinal problems. Was a dumb decision then not to take t hose picks, and it's still a dumb decision now.
