Updated Depth Chart (from Panthers.com)

Changing the defensive scheme has been a damper on this defense.

They were a solid defense the past two years. This year, we'll be lucky to be solid. That depth is not pretty.

The secondary is supposed to be the strength of this defense, and I would argue it could be a weakness right now.

I have to think that YGM is going to play DE (not OLB) in certain passing situations.  We have 5 TEs and 3 DEs.  That is just wrong.

I think Johnson could possibly play DE in a 4-3 as well. A lot was made of him being told that he had to set the edge before he earned the right to pass rush.

If this is a valid depth chart (not just a formality)

1. There will be a trade or something moving for sure.

2. Mays isn't even a guard. I never understood the premature hype on him. There was genuine expectation among some that he would grab the starting RG position based on wishful thinking.

    • Kootchie forever to be the answer to a quiz question.
    • Try to trade back, but in order of preference... Mason Graham, DL, Michigan - Possibly the top DT in the draft Tyler Warren, TE, Penn State - TE1 plus clear top 10 talent in this draft class that fills a need. Can block, open up things underneath, run after the catch, and run the seam. Donovan Ezeiruaku, EDGE, Boston College - My favourite EDGE prospect to have scouted this offseason outside of 2023 JT Tuimoloau and 2024 Abdul Carter. Let him rotate behind Clowney/Wonnum and then potentially start on the weakside. Jalon Walker, LB/EDGE, Georgia - Would fit Evero's scheme insanely well and pair well with Wallace who could be the coverage LB while Walker is the guy that the QB has to guess if he's coming or not. Emeka Egbuka, WR, Ohio State - Will immediately fill in for AT once he's gone (or if he goes down) and is able to run a large portion of the route tree. Malaki Starks, S, Georgia - His freshman + sophomore tape is elite and he'd immediately start as FS1. Mykel Williams, EDGE, Georgia - Loooooooong arms and other traits that gives him the prototypical build that scouts loves. Also showed elite tape as a freshman as a 3-4 OLB, showed out well as a sophomore, but his recent season he played with an injured ankle all season long. Shemar Stewart, EDGE, Texas A&M - Insane measurables, solid pressure rate, good run stopper, but there's questions galore about that pressure to 4.5 sacks rate. Will Johnson, CB, Michigan - Mike Jackson's deal allows him to be cut after just one season if the Panthers find a partner to put across from Jaycee Horn. James Pearce Jr, EDGE, Tennessee - Lots of questions due to recent reports regarding character and coachability, but performed against top SEC talent at a position of need for the Panthers. Armand Membou, OT, Missouri - Word is that Moton's knee is done and the Panthers need to find an RT for life afterwards. The preferred method would be to bring in a guy to develop behind Moton for a season, but having Membou means having a big body that can plug in right away should Moton go down. This would leave Christensen to take over at any other spot on the line should there be another injury.
    • Well I don't disagree with you. But that isn't in the cards this season although we should IMO absolutely consider a QB in the mid rounds with some potential just to have on the roster because Jack Plummer is the definition of an afterthought and Andy Dalton while he is a great guy he is simply cooked at this point in his career let's just be honest. Certainly this year is the put up or shut up year regardless of circumstances. Or at least it should be. I've said all along my concern is this regime led by the Tepper's who have a built in need to save face for pushing for the trade will be willing to accept even marginal improvement as a "win" and seek to explore contract extension options with Bryce. While I like Dan Morgan he certainly is and was a direct part of that as Fitterer’s right-hand man so he also has a key stake in saving face too. I'm just hoping 2025 for the most part is a campaign that will silence any and all doubt and leave very little to be debated. At least then as a fanbase we could come together and end most of these constant feuds over the starting QB at least temporarily. We'll see.
