That's what the point of preseason is, and what determines that are the goals that are set by the coaches.

Harbaugh, just like you are trying to do in this thread, is really using a straw man. No one here is saying that preseason doesn't matter, and I personally have never seen a reporter write that preseason doesn't matter. Everyone knows it matters, but wins and losses in preseason are largely not the measure of "success" during the regular season.

Everyone knows that preseason games matter to the guys who are actually trying to develop and prove that they deserve to be in the NFL.

2007 Lions went 4-0 in the preseason that’s what tell everyone who says preseason matters

Point taken but that’s a bit of an extreme take.

but it's a take that several very vocal posters have taken.

the hot take, preseason does nothing but show that this team isn't good and we're in for a losing season and it shows that we hired the wrong coach.

Yep. It's been ridiculous to the point of a irrationality, and it'll probably be magnified to the nth degree if we lose early games.

Have said it multiple times: Under normal circumstances, you don't really know what your team is until around midseason. And for a team that's just starting out new like we are, it can take even longer.

What you want to see this year is foundation building and general improvement, especially near season's end.

Anything beyond that is gravy.

You got it correct, the measure of preseason success isn’t wins and losses or score. The measure of success is players executing the plays called and winning their match ups. That said, as mentioned above, there are a ton of people saying it doesn’t matter at all and that lack of effort is not a problem. Missing assignments and getting fooled by stunts is not to be expected. That’s why some of us feel a bit more concerned than we were hoped

Who?  Who have you seen perform at a high level through 2 games?

I think R. Williams and Ray are showing they deserve spots on the DL (which is probably why McCall got cut).  I know it's preseason but CJ Henderson has been playing well, maybe Evero can help him be more consistent. Shi Smith had a solid game last Friday and Blackshear has flashed showing he deserves the be in the RB room.  That's just what I have observed watching the games.

Looks like a 15 year head coach, 2019 Coach of the Year, with a Super Bowl has a totally different message than TJ from Buncombe County

It does matter gentlemen, effort matters!!!

It really is OK to not start a thread about every random thought that happens to enter that noggin of yours. Thanks in advance.

The purpose of preseason most years is to give starters a few reps but focus on developing the bottom part of your roster and the practice squad. With all the turnover we were more in need of not just that but playing time to gel all the players and staff and give Bryce significant reps as well as see what we had in Corral. If we were about scoring points we would have played Dalton like the Jets did Wilson for a whole half or the Giants did with Taylor.

Executing and getting experience definitely needed. Looking good in August. Totally irrelevant if most of those guys won't be on your roster after next Tuesday.

Exactly, you have undrafted rookie and second year players with a new system they are learning play against a QB that took a team to the playoffs. He probably would've taken another if the team doctor didn't puncture his lung during a routine shot. Wilson was a top pick and had practiced against them earlier in the week. This team has young players who need to be evaluated so they can make the right cuts/moves. That evaluation is more important than preseason wins.

There is no correlation between dominating preseason and dominating in the regular season. Also, in years past you had these guys who were starters throwing 50+ passes in preseason. Bryce has thrown how many?

If the starting QBs were on the field for like 12 drives in preseason, starters now get like 5.

You often have rookie defensive ends make little to no impact during preseason and then they have 7.5+ sacks as a rookie.

DJ Moore is a terrible preseason player. Yet he almost always puts up 1k yards in the regular season. DJ has 1 catch off of 1 target for a 62 yard touchdown in Chicago this year. He never caught a TD in any other preseason with us. And his 62 yards this year is only lower than his 75 yards in his rookie year. And in his rookie year he only caught 4 of the 12 passes thrown his way.

And there are countless examples of guys like this.

You guys are taking statements and trying to remove context. Winning and losing in preseason? Absolutely DOES NOT MATTER. Effort matters, sure. But you also need to remember that this is preseason and that is has no bearing on predicting how a player will perform in the regular season.

    • NFL Pro has the All-22 up already 😄 Going to grab a play or two from each redzone series to put screenshots to. Looks like AT angled his route off to the near pylon rather than the back corner where Bryce was throwing to. I imagine this is something they'll quickly try to figure out with Thielen back from IR. After watching the All-22 again, this was actually a pretty nifty play. I thought it was a TE screen to Tremble because of the way XL charged the DB, but he quickly shed and kept upfield as seen in the second screenshot. This looks like it had multiple layers built into it with AT running the crosser, XL the fade, Tremble to the flat. The progression would call for the play to go to Chuba here as the LB does follow Tremble out into the flat. Ball hits Chuba low and in the hands, but the LB does a good job disrupting the catch.
    • The bottom lines to me are that a) we played well enough to beat the best team in the league and b) Bryce Young is growing into a bridge QB role (his ceiling) for us. As much as I don't want BY around after the season, it seems DC can still build the O with a game manager at QB for now. Best case scanario, we can build the D through the draft this year and take a QB we have conviction outside the 1st this or next draft. If BY keeps improving, we are going to win a couple more games this year.
    • Bryce has been a completely different QB since coming back. That started in Denver where it was obviously he was playing a lot more loose and willing to push the ball downfield  Bryce continues to build off of the previous weeks performance and that’s what you want to see Bryce has been making some real good anticipation throws. Reading defenses well. Pushing the ball downfield (7 throws of 20+ air yards yesterday. 8 if you want to include PI to Thielen). The deep ball accuracy has been there. Some of Young’s best throws yesterday were incompletions. Sideline balls to XL and Moore both should’ve been caught. RZ dot to Tremble should’ve been caught. And another RZ ball to Moore that Young gave him a chance at. Bryce is starting to execute Canales offense and yesterday Canales finally opened it up a bit. Canales was to blame for the 126 passing yards in Germany as he played a more conservative game.  The next bit I’m looking for his for Young to be a bit more decisive with running the ball. Start putting that on film and it’ll help open things up a tad
