Person's roster review

He lists 21 players as on the bubble for the final 7  spots to the roster listed below.

Teams must get from 90 players to 53 by Aug. 29, and coach Frank Reich anticipates the Carolina Panthers carrying their full complement until the deadline.

Person's roster:

Quarterback (2): Bryce Young, Andy Dalton

Running back (3): Miles Sanders, Chuba Hubbard, Raheem Blackshear

Wide receiver (5): Adam Thielen, DJ Chark, Jonathan Mingo, Laviska Shenault, Terrace Marshall

Tight end (3): Hayden Hurst, Ian Thomas, Tommy Tremble

Offensive line (7): Ikem Ekwonu, Brady Christensen, Bradley Bozeman, Taylor Moton, Chandler Zavala, Cam Erving, Cade Mays

Interior defensive line (4): Derrick Brown, DeShawn Williams, Shy Tuttle, Henry Anderson

Edge (5): Brian Burns, Justin Houston, Marquis Haynes, Yetur Gross-Matos, DJ Johnson

Inside linebacker (4): Shaq Thompson, Frankie Luvu, Deion Jones, Kamu Grugier-Hill

Cornerback (5): Jaycee Horn, Donte Jackson, C.J. Henderson, Keith Taylor, Troy Hill

Safety (5): Xavier Woods, Vonn Bell, Jeremy Chinn, Jammie Robinson, Sam Franklin

Specialists (3): Eddy Pineiro, Johnny Hekker, J.J. Jansen

By my math (and there’s a reason I was an English major), that’s 46 players who shouldn’t have to sweat too much next week when the phone calls start asking guys to come to the stadium — and bring their playbooks.

That includes the veteran corner Hill, who agreed to terms Sunday night. Hill has ties to defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and cornerbacks coach Jonathan Cooley from their time with the Los Angeles Rams. There are at least nine players listed above dealing with injuries — Dalton, Sanders, Hubbard, Marshall, Mays, Erving, Anderson, Haynes and Pineiro. If all are cleared, they’re on the team. (I didn’t include right guard Austin Corbett because he’s not going to be ready for the regular season following ACL surgery in January.)

The players he thinks will make it:

Prediction: Corral, Shi Smith, Ricci, McCray, Jensen, McCall and Barno.

Injuries could change things of course.

Solid article by Person and I feel like he’s spot on in regards to the guys who are guaranteed spots.

Meanwhile David Newton is somewhere trying to formulate competent sentences for his hit piece on Ickey.

Does anyone know if any of the OL beside Bozeman and Tecklenburg can play center? If not, then I wouldn’t be totally shocked to see Tecklenburg make the team over someone like McCray even if he doesn’t necessarily deserve it. It’s a must to have two guys who can play center active on game day just in case the starter goes down.

I also wouldn’t be shocked to see Ricci cut, Reich’s offense doesn’t look like it will feature him at all. I could see a ST’s guy like STOIII, Brandon Smith, or Rejzohn Wright taking that spot simply because they can help out on special teams.

And finally, will Shi Smith do enough to make us carry six wideouts and does the new coaching staff see potential with him? Or do we keep a guy like Kobe Jones or Raequan Williams because we think they’ll get picked up off the practice squad. It comes down to if the coaching staff thinks that there’s some untapped potential with Shi Smith.

Only 7 OL makes me nervous.  But I get that it’s the likely decision since Corbett will make 8 when healthy.

Nine is bare minimum, especially how dinged up they have been all camp and preseason.  This after, two-a-days have been done away with and shorter camps than in the past. I remember years when we carried 10 OL on the 53 man roster.  If they can't stay healthy in shorts and limited contact, we better have some depth.

Mays, Erving and McCray all can play center.  Zavala has dabbled there too.   Teck is expendable and can be stashed on the PS.  Nobody will be claiming him.  Rhule may want him on his Nebraska staff though.

With the injury to Byrd, Shi smith got a lifeline.  We carry six WRs.  Ricci can be stashed on the PS.  FB/HB/TEs are not hot commodities.

We will keep an extra CB.  With the emphasis on subpackages and the inability for our secondary to stay healthy, it would be foolish not to.

I agree with his QB (no Corral) RB, TE (no Ricci), WR (including Shi Smith) ILB, OLB (with Barno) and S assessments.   I think we carry more DL (one after McCall), two OL (Jensen AND McCray--one gets cut when Corbett comes back) and one more CB, possibly STO.

He think Corral makes it....one of the bubble players but gets in...read the last part of the post.

If that’s the case then my nine would be.

Ekwonu, Christensen, Bozeman, Zavala, Moton, Mays, Erving, Jensen, and McCray.

McCray gets cut when Corbett is activated.

OR if Corbett is activated right away because they think he’ll be back before week four then McCray gets cut outright.

Those are only the locks......his roster only has 46 players...there will be 7 more and he lists who he thinks will also make it.

The players he thinks will make it:

Prediction: Corral, Shi Smith, Ricci, McCray, Jensen, McCall and Barno.

    • I'm still not touching Hunter He again said the other day that he plans on playing both sides of the ball in the NFL.  If he is allowed to do that, he won't be as good on either side as his potential and he's going to have serious injury issues and have a short career.  If he's not allowed to do it, I think he's going to become a problem when the team isn't winning as he's going to feel him not being used on both sides of the ball is why. He's being coddled in that environment with Deion and I think it's doing a disservice to him to prepare him for life in the NFL where your coach isn't a 2nd father to you, to where you can just walk into his locker room and steal his shoes like Hunter does to Deion.
    • He’s a tad behind them. Around 15ish of 32 starters in the league. He’s well ahead of a lot of guys. Tua, Bryce, Cousins (present), Rodgers (current), Devito/Jones, Minshew, Russ (current), Watson, Smith, Carr, T Laws deep ball is weak as poo IMO, there’s plenty. And it’s not like everyone is ripping 60+ers. The key component is if you can rip and maintain velocity of the 30-40 yarders which he does super well. Legit every report out there from Brugler to PFF to PFN document him as good/above average arm strength.  Eye test tells me it’s pretty much that as well, slightly above average.
    • 6-10 carries for  35-45 yds and 3-5 catches for 15-25 would be great.
