4 /3 or 3/4 scheme.

How hard is it to setup the new scheme and to implement it. If you have the right players to fit the scheme (big if), can you effectively implement it in one season or does it take much longer.

Can we expect them to "get it" this season or not.

We brought in a lot of players and some of our current ones (Burns and Brown) are better built for a 3-4. So we are looking at our front 7 with our best 2 players being better fit for the 3-4. Depth looks to be an issue, but I think the biggest hurdle is just players learning their new assignments.

I dont think the switch from 4-3 to 3-4 is the issue, I think its that we cant stop teams running on us.

Granted Burns and Houston wasnt out there, but even last year we got torched on the ground and I dont see a pick or signing this offseason to correct it.

Teams are just going to spread out the front 7 and attack the middle until the panthers can stop it. 4-3 or 3-4 is irrelevant until they commit to stopping the run

I hate the 3-4 and was not happy to hear about that being our main scheme.

Running against us was always going to favor the other team when our ILBs are 225-230 when really they should be around 240-250 in a 3-4. It will be an on going issue until we beef up there hopefully by next season.

It takes a couple of years. There are different skill sets you have to acquire on the roster, and then you have the learning curve for everyone getting used to the new roles and responsibilities.

agreed, 4-3 vs 3-4 is pretty much irrelevant since nickel is 80% of defenses. stopping the run comes down to gap control, setting the edge, and making the tackle. some guys are just not playing physical enough and/or not doing their jobs

Burns is notoriously bad(or even lazy) against the run though. So not sure how much of a boon he’d be in this situation.

I've seen 3-3-5 teams stop the run effectively. Scheme matters less than matchup and execution. You don't want to run a base 3-4 against a 2 te set, but you don't want to run a base 4-3 against that either. Neither offers a distinct advantage in that scenario. Base defense is just presuming the offense is in a typical pro set, and pro set is often 3 wr and a single back, so that has shifted. 3-4 fits today's NFL best.

 

We're a year or two away from truly being good on offense. It's why a 7 or 8 win season would be a good year for us this year. Rookie QB, new staff, new systems. We all should be wanting to see progression week over week more than anything.

Going to need some more beef on the defensive line with Derrick Brown. If Tuttle, McCall, or Williams steps up that'd be a huge boost.

Frankie and Shaq looked great at ILB.

Put Burns and Houston on the outside instead of giving YGM all of the chances in the world to do nothing while Chinn is roaming wherever they put him and that run defense instantly looks better.

It's the same reason he isn't even in the same ballpark as Bosa contract wise.  He's terrible against the run, and isn't a true game wrecker.  Wonderful edge rusher, but ultimately he's a specialist and thats it.

I'm not sure if we are talking about the same Brian Burns re: run defense. The Brian Burns I'm talking about is the football player that was #7 in the league for TFLs while also racking up 12.5 sacks in a college defense.
