Despite the doom and gloom of the offense performing poorly for the most part (some warranted, most attributed to vanilla playcalling vs a jets defense letting go of the reins imo), there were a few positives that can be taken away.

For instance, Bryce Young's first NFL (preseason) pass.

In particular, take note of Young's head movement. His begins processing the left side, then quickly makes his way through to the right before landing on Thielen for the first.

For a rookie QB, this is insane.

Super fast processing and progressing through his reads. Something many veterans would struggle with. Young's speed through his progressions and understanding is incredible, and super exciting to see out of a rookie QB. Far from the one read QBs we've had lately and some of the slower processors from the other rookies, Young looks like he belongs.

Despite being thrown to the ringer on his first scrimmage, Young looked the part.

Once the Panthers actually gameplan and the o-line gets more cohesive, I'm sure we'll see his talent blossom. 

Was the trade with the Bears worth it? Time will tell, but so far, Young is looking incredible for a rookie. Definitely a lot to be excited about.

He didn't panic under pressure, Corral missed a couple reads a pro would have made. I wonder if they regret not having Dalton out there a series or two to evaluate the O-line and backup receivers better. Assuming they didn't think it was going to be this bad all around for the offense

Bryce looked like a 5 year vet out there in terms of looking defenders off, knowing where to go with the football, throwing it where only his guy can make a play, etc. I just wish he had more time to showcase a good drive for us.

Also, Ickey was responsible for that first pressure. He didn't get enough depth to where he could trade defenders with Brady in case they ran a stunt (which they did). I honestly don't think they expected the Jets to be running stunts in a preseason game, so maybe there's that. I'm sure Campen will go over film and correct these things.

Corral looked like a guy who got hurt last preseason and wasn’t repping. Got to consider him a rookie again.  Game looks too fast.  Which makes sense.

I’ve watched a few videos this morning and a comment that seemed to be consistent is that the jets appeared to be running a schemed defense you’d normally not see in preseason. Similar to how the patriots have done in the past. 
 

there were multiple disguised blitzes, multi-assignment coverages, dline stunt play and hybrid zones. 
 

jets better slow play that … they are gonna have that tape used against them during the season.

I thought it was a good value for both sides all things considered. D.J. was the key, and he was not as worth as much to us in our stage of development, and within the context of our personnel, as he was to them where they were.  Like you, I'm making that trade every single time.

I’ve never understood the whole “we don’t wanna show anything” argument.  Maybe that provides a benefit for the first half of the first game, but after that teams know what type of schemes you run.  The majority of teams now use the preseason to practice the very things you want to run in the regular season.  It’s fine to sit some players, but at least make an effort to see how your playbook translates on the field in games.  By week 2 everyone is gonna know it anyways.

you dont run the same schemes every week... ever team should have a specific game plan based on their opponent. However, showing your dline, secondary, linebacker schemes in a game that is one by the inches... hurts your competitive advantage. 

There is a reason these professional and experienced coaching staffs stay vanilla in preseason. There is no point you and I could argue that would change that.

You don't show too much because those first two weeks, you're playing key games for the division. You absolutely don't want to show your hand more than you must. In general, coaches want to see basic stuff just to see execution and technique and timing. It's used to address fundamental issues you may have. If you're fuging up the basics, showing a good chunk of your real base schemes and fuging those up helps nobody and actively hurts you once the regular season starts.

As I said in the OL thread, they ran stunts on Wednesday in joint practice. They struggled then and did not learn from it. Very concerning

      A look at all the QBs making championships over the past 35 years says it's not 1st round QB driven. There are only 64 championship QBs, and this includes Jake Delhomme, Kurt Warner, Case Keenum, Tom Brady, Nick Foles, Mark Rypien, Eric Kramer, Brock Purdy, Rich Gannon, Brad Johnson, Russell Wilson and more non 1st round QBs. 5 of these QBs went to a championship in the past 10 seasons. 3 of the 5 won how many of the past 10 SBs? Foles beat Brady. Mahomes and Brady have won 7 of the past 10 SBs. Mahomes walked into a ready made contender. The other 3 are Foles, Manning and Stafford. We know Manning did nothing. It was defense. Stafford managed a defensive game. Foles beat Manning in an offensive shootout. Keep in mind Manning and Stafford were not drafted in the 1st round for the team that won the SB. The Rams have drafted how many 1st round picks in the past 8 years? The Broncos only drafted defense in the 1st round for 5 straight years leading up to their SB, and that's what stopped Cam. Any QB game manager can get you to the playoffs. OL, running game, defense and coaching carry the load during the season. Clutch QBs are needed in the playoffs to get to the championship games, and there is nothing favoring a 1st round QB being clutch over all other QBs. Never draft a QB in the top 20 picks unless they have a professional sports pedigree! If you need a QB it's simple competition and steady flow of a QB type (physicality/talent is not a deciding factor for champions). Sticking to a competitive strategy that filters out QBs who are high TO% and low clutch performance will always work. You're always looking for the one who refuses to give up the starting spot by feeling momentum, showing high situational preparedness, and knowing when to take risks. Top 20 picks should be defense with few exceptions. If you want offense, trade down to get more picks for defense and OL. There should always be a 4 QB rotation (3 roster and 1 practice squad) on the depth chart until 1 has held onto the starting spot for 34 games. Then go to 2 QBs on the roster. Patience in this process is key. There will never be a QB allowed to fail for more than 5 straight games for the myth of long term development. This QB strategy results in hitting on a franchise QB within 3 seasons while building a strong defense and deep OL. The defining factor of success for an NFL Franchise has been the HC/GM combos who have studied, mastered and implemented Bill Walsh's book together. The Panthers franchise appears to be no where near this championship strategy or philosophy. Butting heads over philosophy and mixed/inconsistent strategies have been the constant since Tepper took over.
