Pocket Mobility and Awareness

It really is such an underrated ability for QBs. One of the reasons that Tom Brady was able to play so long and at such a high level was his pocket awareness. He isn't mobile by any means, but he was the GOAT for a reason. Look at highlights of his and just watch him maneuver in the pocket. Small steps to the side, quick shuffle up, find the lane, throw. It looks effortless. He could sense where the defense was as they were bearing down on him. One of the reasons he rarely, if ever, took huge hits.

Hopefully Bryce has some of those similar traits.

I had my first TC experience Wednesday after many many years of being a fan. I've been in a steady climb for years professionally and as a father with two very young ones..  aside from living in SW Virginia theres always something this time of year going on preventing me from getting down to see a practice in SC..  Enough was enough the panthers were aggressive this offseason getting coaching and talent, I'm fugin getting to practice. I woke up at 3am and drove down to be there when the gates opened, and i drove back home afterward. Ended up being a fantastic experience, Joint padded practice with our new 1st OVR QB and Aaron Rodgers... (Thank god i didnt try to go thursday.. by the time i would have been in SC the panthers would have then dropped the tweet saying practice canceled after driving 4.5 hours)

Anyway, I've said in a previous post that my overall Impression of Young was "Wow this MF knows how to maneuver in the pocket to get a completion".  I mean its special.  Its one thing to see shitty practice clips on twitter where you can barely see whats going on. Man, I decided to stand right at the white fence on the sideline at the 45 yard line or so. Dude, that poo took me back to my HS days of playing JV football standing on the sideline watching varsity. I was right there I could see beads of sweat on dudes.

Bryce Youngs pocket ability is amazing. Thats what stood out the most to me.  I had an AMAZING angle on one particular play.  Bryce and the team were on their own 25-30 yardline in 11/11. I was on the 45 so they were to my left a little. Yes, bryce is as small as advertized. in the huddle, hes gone lol. On this particular play the ball was snapped, he drops back.. and from my view it was just chaos. 300 pound men running into each other full force.  Bryce disapears in the pocket.  it felt like a while, i assume he was going through his reads....       I then see him zip right up in the pocket, he dips his shoulders to dodge a defenders arm as he slides up in the pocket..  i see him between the RT and RG and in that throwing lane to the flats, I swear before he could even fully turn his head that ball zipped out quick and perfect spiral to the dude in the flats chillin there as a check down.. 5-10 yard gain I couldnt really see.   I SWEAR an average sized QB would have gotten hing up on an arm or something..   that pocket was collapsing around him but he stood strong in the pocket, maneuvering and dodging guys right where he needed to be to have that throwing lane. I had the perfect vantage point cause it looked like the ball was coming right at me as if it was thrown to me. That was so fugin cool to see dude.  THATS WHAT BY IS ABOUT. Hes as mobile and shifty in the pocket as anyone man. Hes not a vick in a rushing sense, but hes got that bouncey shifty jukeyness in the pocket that he had, except bryce pairs that with elite awareness. Hes got the ball coming out before it seems hes even seen the reciever. Hes like a fuxkin super computer theres basically zero lag processing. He knows exactly what to do presnap, and when the play breaks down hes got elite processing and pocket presence and poise to extend the play and find the open man. Theres zero thinking. Ive seen hifhlights at bama where behind the line of scrimage he has an elite scrambling ability but instead of tucking and running hes keeping the play alive and getting it to an open man.. pinpoint accuracy and in high pressure moments.  Amazing

I saw it first hand. Its something you gotta see first hand to truly see it..  i mean you wouldn't think a QBs pocket mobility and a flats dump off would make you go "wow" .. but man im telling you.  Bryce young is ELITE. Hes not just some little peanut that happens to be really smart..   this dude can move. this dude can evade.    KNOCK ON WOOD I have very very little concern about Bryce as far as his size. Hes evaded injury and batted passes at Bama and now a full NFL TC.  Dude uses his small stature to his advantage.  So many good QBs with size would have gotten hung up in that pocket for a sack. Young dippin and dodgin at the snap of a finger, he goes untouched in a small collapsing pocket having to jump up into that small pocket and zips it to a dude before you can even blink.  amazing.

Dude, give BY even a DECENT Oline and this dude is going to tear defenses new assholes. they will have a damn hard time getting a finger on him. So fugin cool to see in person. I'm a believer.

Hes the kind of QB that can take an average WR and as long as that player has decent hands and is where hes supposed to be, BY is going to be a surgeon moving the ball down the field.

Thats my fan perspective. Bryce young is as asvertized, and to me its CLEAR why he was the #1 OVR pick snd why we traded for him despite his size. He's special.  Have a good friday my fellow panther fans.

art.

As a fan from far away this is the stuff I come to the Huddle for. First have experiences, that get shared with the crowd. Thank you and everybody taking the time and showing the dedication. This is what makes this place worth coming to.

Of course I am also here for the in
depth analysis, since I am a noobie in NFL matters.

I will echo this. I went to fan fest for the first time in many years and just stared in awe like a 13 year old girl at a Taylor Swift concert watching Bryce.

He is so calm and comfortable in the pocket it's unlike anything I have ever seen take the field at QB for this team. Yes I'm aware it was Fan Fest but he literally has no flinch no panic and no extra movement in there. Yes I'm on homer hill but man this dude is going to be special.

@The Huddler

First, congrats on your professional success!

Thank you for that wonderful post. It is the best one I have seen regarding Bryce.  Also, it is the first one I have seen describing an advantage to his height. It is clearer now why the staff is so taken with him...it is beyond saying he is smart. I have a better understanding of who we have as our QB.  Can't wait for Atlanta.

You have taken my excitement to the next level.

Thanks again for taking the time.
