Panthers Receiving Core

Watching the eagles/giants 2night it has re-occured to me how bad our recieving core is as a whole. Any NFL team contending for a playoff spot have 2-4 guys on the roster that can stretch the field deep and pick up YAC. How many do we have?..... ummm... 1. People are wondering why we cant move the ball on offense, I think it is pretty obvious. It is terrible QB play of course, but really who are they going to throw to? We have one explosive reciever capable of making great plays, then we have a 35-36 yr old possesion reciever and a 2nd round bust that couldnt beat a linebacker one on one. How in the hell does management let it get this bad. This team has a lot of holes to fill but this one has to be a priority this offseason. We have to bring in some speed at WR. Ohh yea and maybe a capable QB lol.

corp not core...

And yes we could use a formidable #2 WR

Actually it is not core or corp, but "corps".

And I agree about the WR2.

Everyone should know by now that we need a legitimate threat opposite Steve Smith, and possibly another guy in the slot. I am for Brandon Marshall or Anquan Boldin (but that may require a Brinks truck). V-Jax also strikes my fancy, but are any of the guys realistic?

FA WRs i'm interested in:

kevin walter

jason avant

mark clayton

malcom floyd

chris henry

lance moore

you take any two of these guys and add them to smith and you have one killer WR corps. these guys should be pretty affordable.

i can easily see brandon marshall and anquan boldin becoming available and adding just one of them to smith would make for one of the best receiving duos in the league.

there are a few WRs in the draft i would strongly consider that should be available in the 3rd and 4th rounds...guys like eric decker, blair white, jeremy williams, jordan shipley, and demaryius thomas...there are a good few options. this isn't a great WR class but there is still some value to be had. some of these guys are good return men which would be a huge draw.

Rayz, I really don't know if any one these guys would do it (but two might, like you alluded to). I pretty much know that Moore is a 1000 yard guy, but the Saints probably won't to part with him. Mark Clayton is an underachiever whose hands are questionable. Walter fell off, but seems to me more of a slot guy. I am intrigued by Henry, but how will the injury affect him. I am also intrigued by Malcolm Floyd and Jason Avant.

I just want a legitimate threat with some damned swagger (and that would be nice at QB, also).

Truth is that I am not sure we don't have our second receiver on the team already. I realize that neither Jarrett ot Moore have done anything yet somehow I figure that if these guys played for a team like New Orleans they would be factors.

I figure it is just as much our scheme and playcalling as it is our personnel. when was the last time we had a legitimate number 2 to go along with smith? Johnson in 2006? Moose in 2003?

When a problem lingers year after year perhaps it is more than just plugging in a guy so much as developing your offense to feature all your receivers.

I like Eli Manning and all, but could you imagine Warner, Brady, or Brees throwing to Smith, Manningham, Boss and Nicks? Yikes.

our receiving corps is much much better. Colston is one of the best WR's in the league. Size, speed, hands...he's got it all. Compliment him with 2 of the fastest guys in the league (Henderson- who led the league in yards per completion, and Meachum) and a very reliable, Welkerlike Lance Moore and then put Shockey (who still has some game) out there and I'll put this WR-TE corps against anyone.
