2010 QB depth chart

Obviously there are a lot of sentiments concerning who should be our QB, from Jake to Jesus and everyone in between. Here's how I believe it should be entering camp, with little if anything decided at that point as far as order:

Starter: Matt Moore

He's not the most outstanding quarterback in the world but he is (mostly) efficient. Combining 2007 with 2009 gives one a solid idea for what Moore can and can't do, and what he can do is certainly controlled to some extent by the playcalling he's given. He's not a big risk-taker to the point that it's devastating, and that to me is refreshing. He is, however, a young talent who can lead the Panthers at quarterback in the future, which is no different than anything we'd say about a rookie aside from the fact that Moore has game experience, proven upside and team cohesion. Oh and he won't cost a ton to resign.

Backup: Jake Delhomme

This is where the veteran leadership quotes and charisma references hold value. If Moore gets hurt it's not the end of the world to go to Delhomme for a game or so. He can still handle that. Just not much more. Think 2007 Vinny Testaverde with a little more mobility and much less strength.

Emergency QB: 4th/6th round pick

Receiver and depth are still needed to keep this team relevant, and that's where we should go with our top 2 picks, barring a trade. There will be talent at that point for sure, Juice Williams and Riley Skinner being two of many options. This choice is high enough to potentially land a guy better than Moore, but not that big of a risk so as to handicap ourselves money-wise if it backfires. A.J. Feeley, if he were younger, maybe would force this to move to 2011, but he's not.

At some point the management will need to inject talent into the QB position. Probably at gunpoint, but they WILL need to do it.

Constantly low-balling the position with late round picks, UDFAs and other teams scrubs and running with it is what put us into the position we're in right now (worst stable of QBs in the league with no real development options).

Hoping they actually invest a high pick or go after someone decent in the off-season.

It will look something like this:

1st: Veteran FA/stop gap starter (maybe someone like Troy Smith)

2nd:Matt Moore/Josh McCown/AJ Feeley (whichever player wins the spot in training camp stays, the rest will be cut)

3rd: Draft pick (we will take someone with our first pick in the draft, Tony Pike perhaps)

Jake will be nudged into retirement or outright released. I don't think the new coaching staff will allow him to stay on even if he agrees to be a backup because he had a huge following among the players, and leaving him on the team could cause a riff among teammates wanting their friend to be the starter.

That all sounds good to me. I think Moore could continue to be the starter and do just as well as Troy Smith or some other FA reject, though.

We just need to find a qb who has some real arm strength...having a speedy smith is nothing without a qb who can throw those deep bombs (moore and delhomme got those floating ducks going on right now). you see how sucessful mcnabb and jackson are, we just need to get someone with some good arm strenth. I like moore's decision making and everyting else about him, but deep ball arm strength is lacking in our qb's this year.

Matt Moore IS the answer

The Double Ms may be the answer, but he is the wrong answer.

If Panthers fans want to experience something similar to what we have had the last three years, then Moore is our guy. If we actually want to take it to the next level, where we are consistently in the playoffs every season, as opposed to every other season (or worse), then we are going to have to build around a QB that actually has the ability to strike fear in the hearts of the opposition---from the players to the coaches to the fans---when they drop back to pass and heave the rock. Moore is not that guy.

Al Davis, is that you?

No, QB needs to be priority. All that offensive line depth we need left last offseason because Hurney payed Peppers all our cap space. This offseason we need to use some of the $20 million we'll save waving Peppers goodby to replenish that depth vis free agency. Something we can't do to secure a QB of the future as the free agent pickings are sparce. We need a QB of the future, and a staff who can develop that talent.

After we address QB with the top pick in the draft and plug some holes with cap dollars, we'll see where we need to go with the rest of the draft.

I'm not willing to waste half of next season letting Moore finally find his groove...if he even has one. I want us to compete from the get go. Jake has LOST IT, this is a fact...but what's also a fact is that right now, Moore nowhere near has the leadership and big game confidence that Jake does. Moore can certainly learn it, but it'll take more than the rest of this season because we aren't fighting for a Playoff spot. He needs to be in many do-or-die games to get the toughness a starter should have. We need to bring in a FA, or...say "screw it" and draft someone "supposedly" better than Moore and indeed start fresh. Just as risky but with a better payoff I'd argue.
