With Bryce Young in place at QB, Panthers look to start ‘proving folks wrong’

National expectations are low of course, but it sounds like a lot of players...vets....are not throwing in the towel.  No one making lofty predictions but I love Brown's quote. Sounds like they are ready to get down to work.  They have been praising the new staff and everyone seems on board and impressed with Bryce.  I like starting the season as underdogs and barring bad luck with injuries, expect this team to surprise some people.

Even with the arrival of the draft’s No. 1 pick, head coach Frank Reich with a new coaching staff and some well-thought-of free agents, no one outside of the Carolinas is expecting much from the Panthers.

Sports books give the Panthers the third-lowest odds to win the division, behind New Orleans and Atlanta and ahead of only the Tom Brady-less Buccaneers.

“I don’t think very many people give us a chance at the beginning of the year to do much of anything,” fourth-year defensive tackle Derrick Brown said. “Going out here and proving folks wrong, I think that’s the only message that the team’s got right now.”

But Brown added a more colorful message about the Panthers lying in wait in the NFC South: “Like they say about a snake, man, it won’t bite you ’til you see it.”

The Panthers’ recent track record provides little reason for optimism. It’s been six years since their last winning season (ouch)and playoff berth — a wild-card appearance in 2017.  Julius Peppers had 11 sacks that year at 37 in his return to Carolina, Cam Newton started 16 games. Eight quarterbacks have started at least one game in the five years since, only two of whom (Newton and Will Grier) were Panthers’ draft picks.

The Panthers are one of only seven teams that still hold training camp away from home, and Hurst was planning a Target run to pick up a box fan for the dorm.

Young referenced Spartanburg’s humidity and said the Panthers would need to push through the tough days and practices ahead. Brown looked forward to getting away from his devices and focusing solely on football.

“We get nice compensation for what we do. We all live different lives and have all these different things going on 24/7. When you come here, it’s a chance to truly shut down everything else and just worry about ball,” he said. “Because no matter where you turn there’s either a coach or another guy who plays right beside you. … It’s football 24/7 down here.”

It’s a huge opportunity for us to win a division and make some noise but these are days that matter,” said Horn, who’s been cleared to practice after being sidelined for part of OTAs and minicamp with a foot injury.

“No matter what we’ve got on paper — the No. 1 pick, all these defensive acquisitions — it don’t matter if you don’t put in the work,”

Young impressed teammates and coaches during the spring by quickly processing an offense that has merged Reich’s scheme with some elements from Sean McVay’s system that offensive coordinator Thomas Brown brought from L.A. Young also demonstrated a knack for knowing when and where to slide in the pocket to find passing lanes and make off-platform throws.

But what stood out most to many of the veteran players was how Young announced his arrival to the NFL — in silent mode.

He’s going to go about his business a certain way, kind of like last year when I was with Joe,” Hurst said. “He’s not in your face. He’s not screaming. He’s in there watching film every day. It makes you want to be on top of your game, because you don’t want to let guys like that down.

“Because you know they’re gonna come to practice every single day — Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, day six of camp — it doesn’t matter. They’re gonna be on top of their stuff, so you better be on top of yours as well.”

I LIKE IT!!!

I honestly think the national media's expectations are reasonable.  I've seen some that have us as an "up and coming" team getting a bit of a break in a pretty weak division.  I think it all depends on what the writer thinks of the Saints and Falcons progress since last season ended, as well as the merits of our coaching staff.

Guarded optimism is a good place to be right now.

As far as Young, at his age he is fully aware that good leaders set an example.  That is pretty impressive, and tells me that his work ethic and leadership are largely instinctual by now.

As long as we have our QB and are building around him the right way, I’m not too worried about where we are picked to finish. If we build it right, the respect will be earned over time.

I am fine with the attention the national media is giving us. Rookie QB, all new coaching staff.  Is to be expected.

Is also why I love the veteran leadership we have on this team.

Our team is hungry.

Guard your expectations all you want to, we will win more than is expected.

Gah, this is so refreshing...considering this time last year we were talking about a QB competition between freaking Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield.

I would hate to be a Bucs fan right now. How does that guy keep getting chances? And Darnold in San Fran.

My take is that the Panthers have a lot of team guys.  Burns is 1 example...negotiating a contract but had no thought of not coming to camp.  I am sure that is no accident.
Reich and company seem to be looking for a certain type....physically talented, smart,...did I mention smart?, and good people.

Building he team the right way.  The free agent additions are a great fit(t) and seem to like being here.

I like the start, like the philosophy,  and maybe...we finally are on the road to success.  Going to believe. Why the hell not?

That thought has been running through my mind lately. Frank has aided Fitt in changing the culture. Smarts is an asset. Teamwork is a mantra. Ex players that can coach existing players willing to be coached.

Frank is actually doing what our last coach promised. And it didn't take 7 years. lol

If Bryce even sniffs ROY? Get your travel agent on speed dial. Fingers crossed

Short story long. I've been a Lions fan for mmphg years. It's the same there as it is here. The future looks bright. And it's been too dang long gone.

For Detroit last year. Every play was Duce and his Offense against Glenn and his Defense. I guess when the coaches take it personal, the players do as well. Every play was an opportunity to gloat. It was contagious. And the whole team took on that attack mentality.

If Duce and Evero can come close to replicating that? Because I don't know if Evero is a talker or not.  But, with the young talent we have? I don't care what anyone says. This could be fun right from the git go. Because Duce loves to TALK. lol

Thanks if you read all of this midnight ramblings.

Edit to add; All that was just to say that Duce is going to energize his Offense. You folks want Offense. Just you wait.

    • The agenda was building around Bryce.  2 WR, 3 olinemen, TE, and a potentially elite RB.  I stood up for Bryce all last year because I didn't think you could evaluate him properly with what we had last year in coaching, play calling and personal.  Bryce was the 2nd least pressured QB in the last 2 weeks because of the money Morgan spent on the line.  Despite Bryce looking horrible I'd say Morgan has had an exceptional beginning as GM. Here some more things I liked. Trevin Wallace looked like a banger in preseason.  Resigned Brown.  Gave Horn his 5th year option and Horn is playing very well. *Flipped a 7th round pick for a starting CB in Michael Jackson who has also played well. Filled a depleted roster with solid vets and if you really look at the cap this is a 2 year play.  Almost everyone except the 2 elite guards signed a 2 year deal. Did not pay Stephen Gilmore 10 million for one season. *Got the 0-2 Rams 2nd pick next year. Set a culture and tone of the type of players we want.  *Dawgs. *Elite GM moves.
