It’s not going to be cheap to retain Derrick Big Baby Brown

I'm a Panthers homer but Derrick Brown isn't in the same league as Quinnen Williams. And the reality is, even if they're arguably as valuable in the game as pass rushers, space eating/run stopping DTs don't command the flashy contract numbers. A better comp would be Dalvin Tomlinson who also signed a new contract this year, 4 years $57 million. If Derrick Brown takes another step forward this year, he might be in line for something in that ballpark.

Brown won’t get near that contract because of his lack of sacks. And he has never been that guy, even in college. He was a 3-4 sacks a year kind of guy in college playing against much lesser competition in relation to the talent around him.

Brown also accounts for 0 forced fumbles through 3 NFL seasons.

I totally agree with your assessment on his talent level. To be frank, I'd have doubts signing him to a 14-15 mil per year; especially if I had holes to major holes to fill on the team and had a player or two on the roster capable of giving me similar production at a much lower cost.

Sooooooo easy to say and to say it sooooooooo flippantly.

Brown DESTROYED pockets regularly and repeatedly in college while always being double-teamed and, on occasion, triple-teamed.  Auburn had edge rushers in those years who FEASTED on those collapsed pockets.

You don’t win SEC Defensive Player of the Year as an honorary, polite, going-away gift.

Some of y’all are stretching those ligaments to the near-snapping point.

Brother,

I didn’t say he didn’t provide pressures. But there are other guys who got double teamed and got sacks still. And it does not excuse the fact that Brown doesn’t have a single forced fumble in the NFL. I love the kid. I was happy with the pick and I was one of the few posters here talking about giving him time to develop during a not so impressive rookie season. He isn’t going to get and isn’t deserving enough of the money shared in the OP.

We’re trying to act like he’s someone that he isn’t solely because of draft positioning. Had we taken him in like Round 2 (where I had him graded) no one is acting like we have a potentially 15-20m/per year player on our hands.

He would not have been there in round 2.

Doesn't have a forced fumble, but he does have two picks and plenty of pass deflections!

I understand that folks want him to have sacks, but we can't ignore the other net positive plays that he creates for the defense that have impacted the opposing QB.

I'm interested to see if he's going to have more opportunities to get to the QB. Allegedly, Evero's system rushes four while using the primary pass rusher (in our case, Burns) to eat up double teams. Hopefully pairing that with how the scheme is also known to disguise coverages pre-snap will give DBrown more opportunities to get to the QB.

There is absolutely no point in making any conclusions or even having a strong opinion about his future value before he plays in Evero's defense.

This one sentence post may be the best one I've read since we began this topic. 😆

After looking back on the disaster known as the "Rhule Era", I think your reasoning applies to any remaining roster players drafted by Carolina from 2020-2022. Most of those guys have yet to experience solid coaching at a professional level.

I’m aware, I simply said it’s where I valued him. We always knew he was a DL that is a nonfactor in the pass game. It’s hard for me to value that in the first round.

I wanted Lamb or Wirfs the night of that draft.
