Can Bryce Young lead Panthers to a deep playoff run?

in 2015, we paired a MVP QB with a top 5 defense.  That type of gelling isn't on the table for 2023.

Bryce Young is going to end up having a fine rookie season and folks around here are going to blast him for not being this fictional creation that can meet these expectations.

First, you do not need a top 5 D to win in the Playoffs. You need one that can create turnovers and get crucial stops. That's it. And as of this moment we have no idea what our D is capable of doing.

Second, we don't need Bryce to be an MVP candidate. We need him to be consistent, and accurate. Just because some on the Huddle diminish the talent level on O, does not make it so.

Lastly, I just love how you know that folks around here are going to go nutsoid if Bryce only has "A fine Rookie year". The Huddle and their definitive statements always make me smile.

Im thinking 8-9 wins this season, slow progression by bryce.  Reload on the defense in the off season and make some real noise in 2024.  I just think our defense is going to hold us back more then folks think

Indeed.  While I'm super excited to see our team progress under new management, we are just one player away from being gashed in the run or light up by air, depending on where the season ending injury is.

I was addressing the silly comp of 2015 to the 2023 team.   Which it is.  First, second and last.

and a top 5 D paired with a MVP QB is why that team had success.

You're really talking about two completely separate demographics here.  The crowd who is hyping up Bryce and having unrealistically high expectations is the crowd who buys into the hope and optimism year after year ("sunshine pumpers" as they are often called pejoratively on these boards).  Those people ain't gonna be blasting Bryce Young if he has an objectively solid season but doesn't take us deep into the playoffs/Super Bowl.  The people who will blast Bryce Young on the heels of a solid season are either his haters who didn't want him in the first place, or the contingent of Huddlers who love to poo on the team any chance they get (not arguing that it isn't justified).  This is usually the crowd who finds the overly optimistic crowd incredibly annoying and infuriating and will spite-post if/when things go awry: "LOLOLOL YOU IDIOTS SAID BRYCE YOUNG WAS GONNA LEAD US TO THE PLAYOFFS".

It happens every season.  Who did the vast majority of the blasting of Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Kyle Allen, Teddy Bridgewater, Matt Rhule, etc. during/after the season?  The people who bought into the hype?  Or the people who already were against the signings and knew they were going to be awful?  You can find the answer for yourself in the Matt Rhule Meatball thread on the front page if you're not sure.

You posted a comment. I posted my thoughts on said comment. But all you could muster in return was for you to skip over my comments and basically just repeat the original post I quoted.

And in conclusion, of course we rode our D and Cam to the SB. Who would doubt that claim?

Never mind. I'll see myself out.

I hate to tell you, it was not a comp.

It was a statement about teams that develop a chemistry and turn it into a run.  The 2015 team was great on defense, okay on offense, had a playmaker for a QB, and then something happened.  It came together.  The OL gelled as a group, at least until Wade Phillips watched what Atlanta did and used Von Miller to create havoc.  Until then, the OL outperforming itself had a huge impact on that team's wild ride.

The 2015 team just had a moxie it about on top of the defensive talent and Cam.  That's how they almost ran the table.  Plenty of talented teams don't develop that cohesiveness.

I was in no way comparing that team to this one.  Just saying that if the team can somehow gel together into a cohesive group, it could lead to some unexpected wins.

Your imagination did the rest.

Dang, these over the top expectations on a rookie QB are a tad much.   Why? This is season is about growth, learning and taking lumps.  And we got new systems on both sides of the field that have to be built.  Everyone got us inked into the playoffs.

In the last 20 years I don’t think a rookie QB has gone to the postseason without Pro Bowl caliber players to distribute to or a top of the league D or having legs to take over a game and challenge for the QB rushing lead.  And only 1 made it to double digit wins without some version of the above and they didn’t make the playoffs let alone win a game or go deep.

Been saying this. Our fans are really delusional and kind of embarrassing. My buddy says stuff like this every time year 1 when we have a new QB since Delhomme. He’s the type that doesn’t watch games or seasons consistently. Casual, social fan.

I mean seriously do people not stop and think when this has ever happened? Has it? Has a rookie qb and first year coach ever gone on a deep playoff run? How about just a rookie qb…when did that happen and how many times?

Lord just relax. It’s not happening this year.

Congratulations, you just insulted a whole fan base. Not a bad days work,

Then tell them to relax. lol

This team is set up to compete. Just because you don't believe it, doesn't mean it can't happen cappen. If Bryce is what they are saying he is, we can be a dangerous team.

Just because a thing has never happened, does not automatically mean it never will.

It's a brand new team. From top to bottom. Sure it's easy to say we are probably a year away. But we are going to do it anyway. Not because it is easy. But because it is hard. And all we need is for some good ol fashioned good luck.

The answer is no.

Bryce Young may have 1 playoff win during his rookie contract.

As long as Young is the QB, the Panthers will need to have a championship defense/DC and an offensive play caller who can manage to average more than 2 GWDs per season.

Currently, the Panthers do not check any of these boxes.

So we talking deep playoff run his rookie year or ever?

His rookie year? I'd be surprised. I do expect playoffs this year, but that has more to do with a weak division. Conference isn't particularly strong either.

I also fully expect us to win a few more games this year than last because of better coaching, better QB play, and a soft schedule. I think that's very reasonable, reachable, and, tbh, should be the expectation for any new HC/QB combo.

It just so happens that a few more wins (3-4) will put us at a 10+ win season because (and I know this will be hard to comprehend) we weren't that bad of a team to start off with. We just needed better coaching and better QB play .

Deep playoff run is what I expect year two. Year three, we're fighting for conference champions.

And yes Bryce is going to be the guy that leads this team to all of it.

And those of you who are doubting right now will either get on board and enjoy the ride by mid season or just disappear and only show up on those rare occasions that Bryce doesn't have a spectacular game.

It will be the same poo as it was when Cam got here with these same lame ass fans who are more interested in being right about Bryce being a bad pick than enjoying the ride to the playoffs and success.

Bring hopeful and feeling good about what we're doing here and about Bryce and Reich is a choice.

So is being pessimistic about it all.

And for the life of me I can't understand why anyone would choose not to take advantage of an opportunity to feel great about what is going on here, but I get it.

Feeling pessimistic is safe. Optimism is for the bold. It's just not for everyone. But don't worry...you just go ahead and stay in bed with the covers pulled over your head and your door locked tight and we'll come knocking when it's safe for you to come out and enjoy the sunshine of the Young/Reich era.

Just grab your folding rocking camping chair from Walmart and come out and enjoy the BBQ and beer and the fun. Whenever you allow yourself to feel good about the team, they'll be space for you out here with us.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
