If so, the D is set and Karlsson is an unnecessary expense. Trading Pesce (preferrably) for a winger and keep Skjei.

Kind of depends on where the Canes have everyone slotted to play.

The unit as of right now is:

Slavin - Burns

Skjei - Pesce

Orlov - Chatfield

DeAngelo

If Pesce is moved then maybe you look at something like:

Slavin - Burns

Orlov - Chatfield

Skjei - DeAngelo

If Skjei is moved then you are looking at something like:

Slavin - Burns

Orlov - Pesce

Chatfield - DeAngelo

And if both are moved and Karlsson is brought in then we have:

Slavin - Burns

Orlov - Karlsson

Chatfield - DeAngelo

Why weaken the defense trading Pesce? The only reason the Canes won’t extend his contract is if the asking price and length of contract is too much.

1, where does TDA play? 2, where do you slot Orlov? 

Orlov is going on line 2 at least since he's being paid 7.75m aav.

Well my pick doesn’t count since it wouldn’t have included DeAngelo or Karlsson haha. Orlov at 2. And…

Not sure why we’re so focused on defensemen, when they’re probably the best part of our team.  The TDA thing makes sense to me because we barely had to give up anything and his salary is 50% retained.

Trading for Karlsson and paying the rest of his contract doesn’t make a ton of sense to me if TDA is coming back.  He’s good but I think his average value is something like 11 million for the next 3 years.

Because this FA was completely garbage. There was literally maybe 2 forwards worth the money they were getting paid

So if this deal goes through and they don't make any other moves, where do you place TDA? Which 2nd pairing goes down to the 3rd? I like the Orlov signing but figured there was a trade that was going to happen for a forward.

I think that could work. Play Tony when you need a goal, sit him when you’re ahead to keep it that way. But then who is out a whole game on the offensive line?
