The money was what it was and we had no control over it, but the vitriol that many had on this forum towards him as a player was outrageous.

You have to forgive some people.  There are lot of folks these days whose motto is either "I'm not happy unless I'm not happy" or worse "I'm not happy unless you aren't happy."

He didn't suddenly become worse because he hit a year in his contract that priced himself himself out of the picture, and everybody saw that year coming from day one.  He may not have been worth the number, but he wasn't suddenly worthless, either.  But, people have to go to extremes these days, it seems.

I like Shaq (and did before his new contract), but what I didn't like was his old contract.  People say that isn't his fault, but at some point it becomes a value issue against the cap, regardless of whose fault the contract is.  That's the point where it becomes a business decision, even with the leadership he provides.

The irony was I posted on some random thread about him out here that he almost needs to play a year for free to make his contract worth it, and that is kinda what he agreed to do.  That speaks volumes about him, IMO.  I have no idea what he would have gotten from somebody else had he been released, and that probably factored into his decision, but it never came to that.  That usually only happens for teams that have proven success.

If people need to spray venom, his old contract was a Hurney special:  if we pay him like he is elite, he will become elite.  If that ever worked, I don't remember it.

He originally had a cap hit of 24.5m for this season alone

Now he is on a 2 years 12.6 m contract which is much more in line with his on field capabilities.

fuging Hurney… finally getting rid of the last demons.

I like Shaq, he’s no star but he definitely can play when the scheme is good(it was not under Rhule).

He'll be here next year too on this deal. It's almost all guaranteed plus a 1m roster bonus next year. It's also got 3 void years for sb purposes

    • This is such an incrediblely stupid take. I'm one of the ones saying we need to have a better backup than Andy Dalton and it has nothing to do with any Bryce hate. Take away the names and look at capabilities of our current QB1 and QB2.  Did you not see what happened to Miami last year? Tua goes down and with 2 of the best WRs in football their juggernaut offense looks like preschool yard ball.  We need to be developing a 2nd QB if we're serious about a playoff run. Dalton showed he isn't good enough to get it done for multiple games. Now whether that means bringing in a different vet or actually trying to develop QB talent for once in franchise history, we need to be looking elsewhere to better the overall team.  Having a reliable backup is a good thing. DA wasn't great, but he was serviceable for a little bit if Cam got hurt. DC is supposed to be a QB whisper so let him whisper to 2 QBs and the team is in a better position. Injuries are part of football. You need to be as best prepared as you can be for the inevitable. I'd be making the same argument if we had Mahomes or Brady and not Bryce.
    • Looking at Scourtons tape he reminds me so much of Rucker
    • I really like this draft, not really a reach or bad pick at all in the bunch. I can see every single player drafted making an impact this season with 3 definite starters and Evans that should get a ton of snaps at TE2.   NALO has all the skills and size you look for in a WR1 and should make an immediate impact on offense. Horn will return punts as a rookie and learn a lot techniques from AT.  Scourton has the size, skills and intensity to be a day 1 starter at Strong side OLB and make a noticeable impact for the defense.  Princely will see snaps but will take a little longer than Scourton to become a starter. Needs to add functional weight and strength to his frame to be a 3 down starter.  Will break down further after my head scans.
