2023 Off-Season Thread

Did anyone listen to Don Waddell’s interview on todays trades? I just finished listening, a little frustrating because you couldn't hear some of the questions that were asked. In any case my takeaways (if you listened feel free to chime in):

*They are happy where they are with the team with signings and extensions made today. I got the impression he doesn’t think they have to do anything else major.

*Some potential for another trade (talks)

*DeAngelo trade agreed in principle but sounded to me he hedged a bit in regard to potential other trade possibility (possibility mentioned above)? Don’t quote me on this just my impression it was a bit confusing.

* Couldn’t hear the question but he’s talking to agent Gerry Johannson to reach agreement on someone - I’m guessing a Seth Jarvis extension? Only Canes player he reps I think.

Also this-combined with other things said in the interview it seems to me that if Canes do sign Karlsson, they trade a D man and likely don’t sign DeAngelo. There’s only so much money.

Not to mention how many D-men do you want on the roster?

Canes really pushing hard on Karlsson right now, but one of Pesce or Skjei has to go and maybe both depending on this TDA thing.

But I won’t complain about adding a 100 point defenseman as long as he’s healthy.

I’m hesitant to write the TDA deal off even if we acquire Karlsson due to the fact that the Canes PR guy, Walt Ruff, posted a piece on the deal. You don’t let your PR guy do that if you are going to back out.

Walt wasn’t the only guy talking about the “in principle” agreement on DeAngelo. Did you read the Waddell interview transcript? This is what gives me doubts they can keep Tony if they get Karlsson (and they would be way over cap without more than one D man trade).

I think at the end he sums it up well. They’ve got time to figure it out. It doesn’t sound like they’ll back out of the TDA just because they get EK. However, if they get EK and have been unable to move other guys out to create room then they may have to put the TDA deal on the shelf.

With a $11.5 million AAV on Karlssons contract more than one change would have to happen, that’s for sure. Trades, TDA not picked up, retained salary, etc. Canes have around 2.8 million in cap space left (per Cap Friendly) before picking up TDA (2.5 mil if 50% retained by the Flyers).

This is why I don’t think bunting will be a permanent fixture on 3. It’s gotta be either 2 or 4. Probably 2.

Could be right, he did spend a lot of time next to Matthews and was basically the guy that stirred poo up and jumped in when people were trying to rough up Matthews a bit.

    • been living in town since March of last year after spending 15+ years out on a farm in the middle of nowhere.  Snow was beautiful out there, but always meant a lot of work dealing with the long driveway and long dirt road out and onto paved roads that were the last in the county to get plowed. On normal days it always took 20 minutes to get anywhere. when it snowed...yeah. forget about it for a couple days. still had to go to work, so i'd have to drive on all these narrow and windy snow covered backroads after dealing with my driveway and putting up with the nasty red mud slush on the dirt road. if there was an emergency or some kind of urgent issue that required you having someone drive in or going out, it was just a major stressor.  anyways, i'm just looking forward to snow in the new house in town, where my driveway is really short and the roads are plowed. i want snow that requires no work or stress on me. most people probably love the idea of being snowed in out in the country. been there. done that. i'm looking forward to snow coming in town and being able to get out and about if i need. hopefully we have some this year.
    • I don't think it will be a complete stomping at all. That's not really the 2024 KC team. They have only scored 30 points once this season(shootout versus TB) and their biggest margin of victory has been 13(vs. the Saints). I guess they clearly show better versus the NFC South but not THAT good. Not by their recent years standard.
