NFL Approves Emergency QB

Recommended Posts

So I saw the story going around about them allowing an emergency qb after the 49ers had to use McCaffery briefly at QB then going back to a guy who legitimately couldn't throw.

I mention this because I think this all but guarantees that the panthers will keep Corral on the roster at least.  If you're gonna have your inactive list, why not narrow that inactive list down by one and allow for the 3rds string QB in emergency without worrying about losing an active day roster spot.  Anyone else get that feeling after seeing that this rule change happened?

Just yesterday we were talking about Corral and Bryce battling it out for the starting position. Now we want him as an emergency QB.

This is why we click The Huddle for the daily laughs.

Pff, I never had doubts about that.  Young is QB1, no matter what without a doubt, and most likely Dalton will backup as a steady vet.  The problem to me is Corral would get caught in a numbers game, but I do think he still has long term potential.  With the new rule I think its more likely than not that they keep 3 QBs just to be able to utilize the new rule in case of emergency and meanwhile continuing to develop Corral who I think if he develops becomes our Backup next season.

So you still have to keep 3QBs but you just don’t have to activate 3 QBs?

im usually good with 2 QBs, has any team ever won a SB with a 3rd string QB?

I dont know about teams with 3 qbs, but also this rule has never been in place so I think this is going to be a more common discussion among front offices.

Only you thought anyone was talking about him being the starter.

There was a similar rule between 1991-2010, different guidelines.

The third quarterback rule was a rule in the National Football League from 1991 to 2010 that governed the use of a third quarterback in addition to the starter and the backup. The rule was abolished for the 2011 season, when the NFL increased the roster size to allow 46 players to dress for a game.[1]

In 2010, the last year the rule was in effect, teams could dress 45 players for game day. If they had two quarterbacks dressed for the game, they were allowed to dress a third quarterback who did not count toward that limit. However, if the third quarterback entered the game at any position before the third quarter ended, the starter and backup quarterbacks became ineligible to play for the rest of the game.[2] The third quarterback, however, could play in the fourth quarter while preserving the eligibility of the starter and backup.

The full text of the rule was:

Teams will be permitted an Active List of 45 players and an Inactive List of eight players for each regular-season and postseason game. Provided, that if a club has two quarterbacks on its 45-player Active List, a third quarterback from its Inactive List is permitted to dress for the game, but if he enters the game during the first three quarters, the other two quarterbacks are thereafter prohibited from playing.[3]

This is a good change. But it should have happened awhile ago. It's funny and revealing of the league offices motives it took one of the more popular teams in the league being taken to the woodshed in the NFC championship for it to happen. I'll say it again. Fug the 49ers.

Lame thing is if one of the top 2 QB's is cleared to return to the game, the QB3 has to go back to the bench even if they're balling out. I'm sure teams will play injuries up or down depending on the scenario, since being healthy enough to play is often subjective

Wtf so he still has to count towards the 53? This still doesnt guarantee Corral staying. We still could use that extra roster spot elsewhere. Kinda weird rule that you can essentially have 48 on the gameday roster, but still have to only have 53 o nthe entire roster. Just make it 55 and make them all active already god dammit!

This rule was definitely needed without question.  I can’t wait for some team to grab and extra cookie from the jar somewhere and ruin it for everyone else.  It feels like this is an extra roster spot at QB which is fine but someone will exploit this somehow.

Maybe this means 32 less free agents available in a crunch.  Interesting to see where this goes

    • We could easily pick apart yesterday’s game: dropped passes, blown coverages, bad tackling and red zone issues to name a few. But it was clear that this wasn’t the same team from earlier in the season. They fought back and hung with the champs until the end. That’s what I was excited to see and it gives me hope that we’re on the right track.
    • I think BY played well today and exceeded expectations. I will temper future expectations as he has to string together many games of consistent quality. One game doesn’t convince me that he is a franchise QB or even a guy you want to stick with for another season. One game doesn’t erase all the negative play and limitations from the past couple of years. I hope he balls out and continues to get better but for me the verdict is still out   That said, I think he gave the team and fans hope yesterday which is a lot more than what we had when we woke up Sunday morning.
    • He was vastly improved today and we need to see more of Bryce the rest of the season to continue evaluate him in order to decide what the heck to do with him at the end of the season. He must play at least like this and improve more from here the rest of the season in order for me to keep him. No more 123 yard passing games and want to see at least this output weekly from him. If this is Bruce improving slowly over time then Canales is even better with developing QB's than I thought he was but still too early to tell and we need to see him the rest of the way as he has at very least earned back the starting gig moving forward.
