Darnold will look like a decent starter on that roster when everything is going fine and the run game is clicking.  As soon as he is pressured or there is pressure on him to deliver he will let them down.  Unfortunately he doesn't have the mental fortitude to handle pressure at the NFL level and not many do.  I've seen him completely shook way to many times on the sidelines to think he can ever be a true franchise QB.  A talented backup on a strong roster sure but that's his ceiling.

This is like when some women fall in love with bad boys thinking they'll be the ones to reclaim them and make them husband material again.  Darnold is who he is.  He has limited processing ability (probably scored an 18 on the S2 test), no composure under pressure, can't throw receiver open to save his life.

Shanny is going to turn Darnold into an All Pro

Once again you can put any average QB with the 49ers and they will win a lot of games. A rookie almost had them in the SB. That team is loaded with talent. It's going to be hard for Darnold to fail given all the talent and coaching he has around him.

Do you think he starts over Lance week 1?

Rhule was his coach. Even Baker played better after he left Rhule. Im not saying Sam Darnold is a pro bowler but the 49ers will still be a top 3 team in the NFC with Darnold at QB.

Because he effing sucks.

Not denying that Darnold has some talent, but he is easy to rattle once the pressure starts getting to him. You can have every skill player around him be an all-pro, but if he starts to panic, things will go south quickly. Wish him the best, though. Seems like a good guy.

49ers O is all about seeing the field with quick and good decision making.  That's not a place for Sam to thrive 

Best place for Sam Darnold would be a cloud of dust offense that hands the ball off and ask the QB to occasionally gamble deep downfield off the play action IMO.  Basically an era gone by.

He does when his first read is open. It's just that when his first read isn't open AND immediate pressure doesn't force him to instantly check down, that's when disaster strikes. Sam Darnold having to go through his progression is likely to yield a negative result. Unfortunately for him, NFL DCs excel at taking away your first option. That's why Darnold looks good in systems until DCs get a few games of film to study. Once they get a feel for Sam Darnold within an offensive system it's a wrap. They've got him.

I think there was a report if im not mistaken saying he is QB 1 right now because Lance/Purdy are coming off injuries.

 

Im not even sure Lance will be on the team week 1. They will probably trade him.

I think they want to see if Purdy is legit before they trade away Lance. His value would be at a low right now, if he looks decent this year they could possibly get more.

      I'd say its definitely going to be addressed this off-season.  We went into the last draft with a roster of RBs including:  Chubba, Blackshear, and Miles Sanders. We picked Jonathan Brooks in the second and still signed Rashaad Penny afterwards.  Fast forward....One turned into a top 10 back, 1 is injured/out for most if not all the '25 season, 1 retired, 1 will either take a huge paycut or be cut, and the last is a restricted free agent. We brought in Mike Boone as well. Add him to the free agent list also.  We need a physical option.    Which qualifies:  Ashton Jeanty(Boise St): Overall ranked Top 10. Almost 2k yards after contact, 28 tds. Would take our first rounder. My money would be on an NFC East team selecting him. (97.2 PFF run grade) - 121 forced missed tackles.  Omarion Hampton(UNC): Ranked everywhere from 20 - 59 overall. Consensus #2 back after Jeanty. He'll be a second rounder. 1,222 Yards after contact w/ 15 tds.  (90.5 PFF run grade) - 72 forced missed Tackles Kaleb Johnson(Iowa): Ranked from 38 - 69 depending on which media outlet you prefer but generally #3. 2nd/3rd possibly. 1,060 Yards after contact w/ 21 tds.(86.7 PFF run grade)- 66 forced missed tackles Cam Skattebo: Ranked from the 50's - 104. Every mock I do he ends up BPA at some point. 969 Yards after contact w/ 17 tds(92 PFF Run Grade). Probably the best receiving back of the group. 81 forced missed tackles.  If the '24 and '25 draft classes were combined, IMO the rankings would be, in order: Jeanty, Hampton, Brooks, Johnson, Skattebo. I wouldn't take one high but I'd take one for Chubba and Brooks insurance.
