Why can't we just move Chinn to ILB next to Shaq and be done with it?

Everyone is way overthinking things

Chinn is a freaking playmaker and an athletic freak, if you don't think the coaching staff has a plan in place for how they're going to use him, you're fooling yourself.

He might not get an explicitly named position that he stays at, but he's going to be on the field for almost every defensive snap unless he needs a breather.

He's going to be used differently week to week and even play to play, he can rush the passer, he can play the run, he can cover the TE, can cover many WRs as well.  Having him on the field will help keep offenses guessing as to what he's doing on any given play, and subsequently, what the rest of the defense is doing.

Teams won't know if he's rushing the passer or dropping into coverage on any given play, he's going to be very hard to account for pre-snap.

Yeah even if we as fans are having a hard time neatly fitting him into a 3-4 position, it doesn't mean Evero doesn't have something in mind.  I think he'll be a critical part of this defense and he will be in 92% and above snaps.

Exactly

If you think of a lineup as a chessboard, Chinn is going to be our Queen, the piece that is most versatile and can be used in numerous ways depending on the situation.

We're too stuck on explicit positions, but in today's NFL, having a guy like Chinn is so valuable.

When we play the Falcons he's likely going to be used as the guy covering Pitts, but when we play a team without that kind of TE he's probably going to be used as a pass rusher.

If we play a team with a WR room similar to ours, he'll be the Nickel taking on guys like Thielen or Mingo, big physical slot WRs that would be too big and strong for most CB's.

If we play a team with a speedster like a Tyreek Hill, I'm guessing he plays a little deeper in a hybrid LB/S type of role to allow one of the true Safeties to play even deeper in the defensive backfield to protect against the deep ball.

I'd imagine Evero is salivating at the multitudes of how he can use a weapon like Chinn, not freaking out because he doesn't fit into a neatly defined box of a single position like so many here are.

Nickel is one of the most important positions in 3-4. He will be on the field a lot even if that’s all he plays.  We could effectively have 2 nickels on the field a decent bit in “dime” coverage. Rowe, Jammie, etc can all play the other spot.

bigger question is where does Luvu go in nickel if Shaq is ILB. Likely means he’s at OLB and haynes/barno more backing up Burns or 3rd down specialists.

If Navarro Bowman could do it at 6'0 230 (for a Fangio defense w/Evero on staff), I think it's possible Chinn can at 6'3 230.

And in that event, I think Luvu floating to OLB (just like he did in college), could work for base.  Which again, will only be 25-30% of our snaps.

Majority looks will be in nickel or DB heavy sub packages.

6’3” 230 isn’t very similar to 6’0” 230.

Weight is spread out over a larger frame.

Burns is a fine example. He’s probably 250ish now, but at 6’5” with long arms, people still think he needs more weight for run support.

I’m a “Chinn needs to be in the box” supporter myself, but not because I think he has the right frame, but he plays big, is instinctual, and is probably our most explosive defender. Fearless too.

To play a more permanent role inside, and to add to his career, he should get up in at least the 240’s to bang with the big guys.

But as you pointed out, base defense is simply that, and we will have numerous packages and ways to utilize him outside of base.

Im excited to see how we use Chinn this year.

look up "star position" it's a hybrid DB/OLB that has the freedom to roam and look for opportunities to disrupt. they can line up anywhere based on what they see the offense doing. Jalen Ramsey played this role with the Rams and this is something that Evero became familiar with in LA and i think he utilized in Denver.

just something to think about, because that is what Evero might have in mind for Chinn.

That’s the best point here.. We’re not getting paid to construct this defense.. Evero is let’s see him cook before kicking players off the team based on our non professional understanding.. That also goes for YGM, Shaq, Henderson, and Luvu.. Everybody thought Shaq wouldn’t fit and be gone .. But he talks to Evero and all of a sudden he takes a pay cut to stay and be in his system..

Evero is why the DJ Johnson pick didn't bother me.

It still bothers me but I’ll give the benefit of doubt until they prove me right or wrong.. But it’s a great point because I do trust Evero and Capers more then Snow and Rhule..

When the right guys are in charge I am more prone to sit back and see what happens.  When it's the wrong guys I get more disgruntled.  If Rhule made that move I would be complaining, with Evero I am more like ok let's see how this unfolds.

Something I remember from a J Rodriguez interview discussing Evero is he’s the type of coach and scheme developer who is inventive and creative… He takes old ideas and adds his on spin to them.. So what we thought about the 3/4 defensive philosophy for years might be wrong when considering Evero different spin on it.. Then you add in the base foundations of Capers who has been a 3-4 guru and we might need to sit back and watch the show..
