Carolina Panthers Draft Grade

we traded up to number one and got the best player in the draft at the most important position which we have neglected for years. For that reason alone this draft can not be anything lower than a B+. I'd say the rest of the draft was fine. Did not like the trade for DJ but I understand the logic. Overall I'd give us an A-. Zavala pick was an A+, Mingo pick was an A.

TE from Georgia was never going to get drafted by the Panthers.  He took himself off the board completely with his visit.

is this speculation or do you have actual info on this

Bryce Young = B he was the best player in the draft but we gave up the farm to get him.  I like trading to 1 rather than 2 or 3 though.

Jonathan Mingo = C+ the last big physical wr and we took him about where he was slotted.  WR who doesn't get open but can catch disputed balls.  We had a lot of options here but the biggest was the LSU Edge rusher. All in all, there was no WR like him with our next pick.

DJ Johnson = D there was no need to panic and trade down here. We have a wr that can't get open in Wingo and now an edge rusher who can't get to the quarterback. He's also old at 24.

Chandler Zavala = A- great value this late. Always a good idea to build the oline

Jammie Robinson = A- can play multiple positions; dude loves football.

That works out to a B-.

Bryce Young: A+. Franchise QB, best player in the draft.

Jonathan Mingo: B-. Love the player, but we have so many other needs over WR.

DJ Johnson: C-. You draft based on traits in the 4th-7th rounds. Not in the 3rd. He might also have character concerns. Plus the trade up was not necessary at all

Chandler Zavala: A. Great pick, value wise. Position of need. Chemistry with Ickey.

Jammie Johnson: B+.

Draft grade: B

It seems like folks on this board are harder on the draft class than pundits out there. Most have rated the draft in the A- to B range. I give this draft a solid B at this moment. I think we got the best QB in this class, a good receiver with potential, a great value OL in the later rounds, and a good safety with our last pick. With that said, I feel we have the best staff we’ve ever had and I’m going to trust their judgements until proven wrong.

If the mods already have one of these up, feel free to delete, but I didn’t see one. What would you give the grade of our draft this year?

6. Carolina Panthers (A-)

They only landed five players and, hey, second-round WR Jonathan Mingo and/or fifth-round S Jammie Robinson could be winning lottery tickets. But this was all about the bold move following the scouting combine to pry the No. 1 pick from the Bears and turn it into former Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young. And GM Scott Fitterer, HC Frank Reich and owner David Tepper – had they not surrendered a slew of picks and WR DJ Moore – probably would have lost out had they not perhaps overpaid as early as they did. With Tepper's long-awaited QB1 finally in place, should be fun to see what Young can do – especially in a division that seems eminently winnable.

Bryce Young- A+(got our potential franchise QB, love hearing this guy speak he just sounds like a franchise QB. Hard working, insanely intelligent has all the mental intangibles of a franchise QB. I think we got something special in this dude!

Jonathan Mingo- B+(incredible athlete, great work ethic if he hits he hits big. Was a my guy this year, just thought we might have even been able to trade back and take him.

Dj Johnson- C(traded up for a 25 yearold rookie that we likely could have gotten with our later pick, combined with limited production. Saving grace of this pick is his freakish speed and power.)

Chandler Zavala- A(Awesome pick, investing in the oline of your rookie QB is always smart. Especially when his guy is an amazing athlete, scheme fit, paired back up with his college buddy Icky.)

Jammie Robinson- C+(Ok pick, worries me as a tweener between being too slow to man the slot and too small to play SS. On the positive side, he seems like a uber confident guy, freakishly strong for his size with 23 bench reps at 191 pounds. If this guy can use his strength to press WRS and disrupt their routes early I think he could be fine from the slot.

Agree with this for the most part. I think Robinson is a solid B fora 5th round pick.

Very reasonable, I hope he works out the more I watch him the more I like him. This guy is a dawg and he can’t stand losing which is a very important trait, you want a team full of guys like this.

    • I hope he does well for the team's sake, but he's never going to go down as one of the greats or a monster legend. There's not a thing in him that screams "keep pounding". More like "keep slapping". He just doesn't inspire. he's not capable of it.
    • Second week in our row our defense had stretches of looking like an actual defense. And the turnovers, those were impressive. Tipped pass INT, juggling a slightly behind throw INT and then a peanut punch fumble that decided the game.  - Chuba, obviously.  - Numbers aren't explosive in the slightest but Bryce did have some good throws, avoided any major mistakes and some of his bad habits like scrambling out of the pocket prematurely and taking unnecessary sacks were not really there. Going back to Dalton feels more like a sideways move now, especially how awful Dalton fell off.  - Legette and Coker co-leaders iin receptions. They both did have a bad drop but then again, they are both rookies. Even if BY doesn't work out, these kids aren't going anywhere for a while. - Eddy P didn't Gano the game-winner.
