Not gonna lie, this talk about being able to save money on offense now that we have this solution at QB freeing us up to focus on D gives me PTSD style flashbacks of the mistake we made doing exactly that with Cam. At least we have an OL in place this time around.

Right and you see teams with franchise QB's giddy that they just drafted a stud WR. We still need one of those. I hope TMJ takes a big step this season but that's TBD at best rn. We need another playmaker.

I don't get into the whole draft values thing, but with only one TE taken so far, getting a top pass catching TE would probably be better than a lower ranked WR if the Panthers go for a weapon.

I would definitely accept a stud TE that can bully defenses for the time being.

I do want to shout out Nicole Tepper. Most of the time she’s mentioned on these boards, it’s some veiled misogyny scoffing at her inclusion in team affairs. But it was refreshing to see her excitement and giddiness in the draft room in contrast to the emotionless blank faces of Reich, D. Tepper, and Fitterer every time the camera switched until the pick was made (then high fives were being dished out all around). I’m not one of those people who hyper focuses on the body language and demeanor of draft rooms, but hey I simply like seeing people enthusiastic and happy…call me crazy.

I'm a firm believer that once you have that franchise QB in place, you build around him FIRST. If that means putting the D on the backburner for a year or two then it is what it is. I mean, as things sit right now I'd honestly take our overall talent on D over our overall talent on offense so this seeming focus on defense, defense, defense has me a bit baffled since we went out and hired an offensive minded head coach and have mortgaged the next few years of the franchise on a trade up to #1 to draft a QB. You'd honestly expect the polar opposite approach. Let's make sure we get the most out of this investment that we've mortgaged the immediate future of the franchise to acquire.

Same, then next time don't act all self righteous and act like just because someone doesn't have a billi in the bank they ain't ish check your self. Leave it at that

that is not what I implied at all, but the fact that was your knee jerk reaction shows that it is something you're insecure about - and you should probably check that.

Let’s change the story a bit.  You are a shareholder in a company.  The Board hires a new CEO because the company is flailing around, losing money, and the former CEO gets in some hot water with the ladies.

It is obvious that the COO and President are in over their heads. The new CEO keeps them around for a year before deciding they can't turn the ship around.  He first fires the COO, but then lets the President help him find a new COO.

The CEO hires a COO, gives him carte blanche, and an enormous salary.  The new COO goes on to hire his cronies.  They start off okay, making staff changes, rebuilding the company, and changing the product line.  The company is losing money, but the losses are no worse than the previous crew and some changes look like they are positioning the company to turn things around. The CEO finally figures out the company president has no idea what he is doing, cans him, and brings in a new president whose hands are somewhat tied by the COO's carte blanche.  In short, the organizational structure is bass-ackwards at that level.

Then year two comes, the company shows no progress either on the balance sheet or their market share.  The product line has some major holes and weaknesses, and overall is not selling.  But, the COO keeps preaching “trust the process.” Rumor has it the president is being given more responsibilities of, well, a president.

The CEO gives them a third year and things look just as bad if not worse, and we keep hearing “trust us, we are not as dumb as we look.”  Finally, the CEO sends the COO packing, and his cronies are all flushed out shortly thereafter.  An interim COO comes in.  The president assumes all the duties of a president.  The company posts losses in year three, but not as bad as the previous years.

The CEO and president hire another COO who hires an experienced staff with some young, up and comers sprinkled in.  A new product line is announced.  At this point, there are no numbers as production has not yet started.

Is that CEO an asset, a liability, or is the jury still out?  And are you buying more shares, holding, or selling?

this!

You can draft a super talented QB.  Give him a bunch of average joes and you most likely are going to look like you got a bust on your hands.

I don't think our current setup is a place where a #1 overall pick is setup to thrive and grow at the moment.  Think the offense around what a rookie QB present day will be is being drastically overrated by some.

You can look at most of the recent rookies that have really shined.  They were in great places from an offensive skill stand point around them.  Why did Cam, then Luck, then Herbert set records in passing?  It wasn't just there talent.   They had casts around them made for a rookie QB to have success.

I care more about Young developing than our W/L record in 2023.

Bingo. You aren't drafting a QB at #1 overall for next year. You're hopefully drafting for the next decade. My concern is that we think that Reich's system plus Bryce Young means you can get by with JAGs at the other offensive skill positions. That's what we did with Cam. That'll lead to a short shelf life for our QB again. Young won't be running like Cam did, but he'll be scrambling around trying to buy time for his subpar weapons to get open and that'll lead to taking more hits.

yeah, and the Panthers PR is essentially they built this great offense for a rookie QB.  I just don't see that.

We added a journeyman TE.  Decent.  We are overrating him because our TE play has been non-existent post Olsen.

We added a WR that has been hurt his entire career.  Suited up for only 65% of his available games.

An aging and declining Theilen who I do like being paired up w/ a rookie QB.

and a returning 3rd year player with 1 career TD that still hasn't amassed 500 career yards.

and a very solid runner who isn't known for his great dual threat ability.  Backed up by stone hands Chubba.  I do like Sanders.  But he isn't CMC.  He needs help to round out the backfield.

I'd rather the draft focus on the offense.  Focus at looking at WR/TE/OG talent.  Especially rounds 2-3.  Try to find a pass catching RB late.

I think this should be a draft about Young.   Not spreading the draft assets all over the roster.

David Tepper is obviously an incredibly intelligent man.  I'll give him credit- he has basically admitted (as much as a self-made billionaire can bring himself to do) that everything about Matt Rhule went against the process he would normally follow.

I'll say this.  This feels as much 180 degrees away from the start of the Rhule Era as possible.

Everything this time makes sense.  We'll have to wait to see how this plays out on the field, but as a fanbase, if you can't get behind the decisions Tepper has made over the past 6 months, I question whether you have the best interests of the Panthers in mind, b/c these recent decisions have been good ones.

First, he paid the price to get to meddle. It is his right.

Whether he does it well or not, is more a question than will he meddle. Of course he is gonna meddle. He has, and will.

edit: switching the D, makes it hard to give more to the O.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
