Which team ‘won’ round 1 and which team ‘bombed’

I get it, Bijan was the top rated RB, but have teams not learned that you just don't take RBs in the top 10? We had the most versatile RB in the NFL, and didn't win games. Saquon Barkley's team never does sh*t. Derrick Henry had some of the craziest seasons from a RB EVER, and only got to the AFC championship once. Dalvin Cook teams never did anything. Jonathan Taylor one of the best backs in the league, his teams never do anything. Not to mention, even if he DOES ball out, then you have to pay a RB top dollar on his next contract, and we've seen first hand how that works out.

there were several directions the falcons could have gone that i was kind of worried about that would have made them much better. i was more worried that they'd start building up the defense more. jalen carter sitting there had me really nervous. they take bijan and i'm kind of...hmmm....he's good, but 1) i trust our defense to be able to contain him and 2) while they have added a little help to the dfense, obviously it's still not the priority it should be. 

i don't like them drafting bijan, but they could have gotten a few players who would have hurt us more.

Winners: Panthers, Cardinals, Bills

Losers: Detroit, Texans, Patriots

Regardless of who the picks pan out to be, Texans and Eagles had a clear plan. Texans got CJ and Anderson, who I think will thrive under Ryans, and the Eagles built Georgia north to stop Mahomes and Burrow. 

Lions picks looked like a blindside after Witherspoon went at 5. The other really strange one was GB. They went defense when they seriously need receivers for Love to throw to. It makes no sense at all. 

I hate to say it because I live out here, but I like what Seattle did. Lock down the secondary and add the top WR to go with Lockett and Metcalf.

But at the same time, pre CMC the 49ers season looked LOST. He was the big addition they got from us and that turned everything around.

I like the Eagles and Texans draft.

The Texans drafting C.J. Stroud ,then pulling a surprise by going back to back with picks.

I thought the already loaded Eagles got even better by drafting Jalen Carter.

Winners:

Carolina Panthers: You can disagree with the pick but our organization filled with some of the best minds in football went up to 1 to make sure we got the exact guy we wanted and didn’t have to hope and pray some other team passed up on him. We were a 7 win team with no QB and poor coaching. This should have us in the playoffs right now. This is a clear win for an organization as cursed as us. 

Houston Texans: They clearly had a plan. I’m not sure if they would have picked Bryce over CJ if both were available but they sprinted to the podium the moment our pick was over to go get their guy and then they spend their time negotiating a deal to get the #1 pass rusher in the draft one pick later. They are still devoid of talent but when you come away with a draft board that has you snagging some folks #1 QB and the #1 rusher… home run. 

Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles continue to just make intelligent moves and got the guy most folks were saying is the best player in the entire draft plus Nolan Smith who is a stud and a great leader. Their defense was supposed to take a step back this season and now I am not so sure. They look primed for another deep playoff run. 

Chicago Bears: The Bears spent this draft getting my #1 Tackle to protect Justin Fields, picked up an extra fourth rounder next year to drop 1 spot to make it happen and then factor in what has already transpired. The Bears are coming away from the draft with DJ Moore as well getting pick 61, next years first and the year after second. It’s the type of haul that if Fields isn’t the guy they have the ammunition next season to go get one or they spend most of their draft capital on defense the rest of this year and next year and that team would be totally rebuilt. 

 

Losers: 

Detroit Lions: I can understand the mentality of the Falcons picking Bijan Robinson. I can’t wrap my head around the Lions selecting Gibbs at this slot. To me they already had running backs plus this is WAY WAY over value for him. I think they could have got him in the second for sure. Just a waste of resources. This whole draft should have been mostly defense for them. 

Green Bay Packers: They went with Lukas Van Ness when they need to find out what they actually have in Jordan Love. Where is the offensive help? This pick should have been Quentin Johnston or Jaxon Smith-Njigba. 

Buffalo Bills: The Bills needed a WR to compliment Josh Allen and Steffon Diggs. They missed out on that run and took the first pass catching TE off the board. However, as a friendly reminder, the only rookie TE who has ever been productive in the modern era at an elite level their rookie season was Kyle Pitts. And Dalton Kincaid is absolutely not Kyle Pitts. First round TEs outside of Pitts typically get you in the 400 yards area. This is not worth a first round pick and between Allen running often and the other WRs on the team I don’t think there is going to be too many passes being thrown his way as well. Folks liked the pick but it was a panic move for Buffalo after watching four WRs go off the board. 

Kansas City Chiefs: What a reach for a local kid. But it doesn’t matter in the end because as long as Mahoney and Kelce stay healthy they have a shot at the Super Bowl. The last time they picked this late they drafted CEH and hes been nothing in the NFL to the point where the team was relying on a late round pick out of Rutgers to be their guy down the stretch. This is another pick that likely will amount to little to nothing and be replaced in a couple years. While you have Kelce around, the TE from ND, Mayer would have been an awesome pickup to allow him to learn from Travis as he is older now. 

Everyone else either had picks I could understand or were expected.

Year 3 and healthy Pitts, year 2 and improving Drake London, plus Patterson and Robinson at RB / Slot is a pretty nice offensive group thats young and can grow together. The problem is if Ridder doesn’t step up they waste the year. However, if Ridder doesn’t step up, the next rookie QB is walking into a situation with a lot of playmakers around him.

The media won't put us up there as a biggest draft winner.  But, if we made the trade yesterday (instead of weeks ago and it being "old news") we'd be listed as one of the top winners.

The Texans did awesome.  I know they have holes but they got the star to build around on both sides of the ball in one draft.  Yes, we went the other way, building a team first so as to drop in a QB, but I can't fault them at all for using this draft capital to go this route.  (And it explains why they didn't jump to do that three-way trade with us and Chicago.  I think this was a much better plan for them.)

But the Eagles win this draft.

Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn were in New Orleans when the Saints drafted Alvin Kamara.  I am sure the familiar style of Gibbs played a part in why the Lions fell in love with him.

true. but he'll be walking into a situation where these guys are also going to be looking for another contract soon. small consolation, but i'm not a believer in ridder except that i don't mind him being the falcons QB for a while. i do feel like, though, if Young takes off like it's believed he will, i won't be worried by any other teams in the NFCS.

they win the first round anyways. there's still a lot more to go, but its going to be hard to top what they did in topping off that defense.

Count me in as not being quite as high on what the Texans did. Stroud was a great pick but they gave up a lot for Anderson, and I say this as someone who had Anderson as the draft's #1 player. But they gave up their first next year which could easily wind up being a top five pick.
