I hope we just pick best available. Some strong TE’s left too

Yep and that second strong TE can make up for a lot of offensive weakness and cause mismatches particularly in RPO.   Hurst is ok but he never was top level and that’s kinda disappointing

id rather have that then a second level WR. ..

Then we could spend that draft capital trying to replace him while currently having no other proven pass rushers of his caliber on the roster. Sounds like a great way to neuter the defense.

That's how the business of the NFL works these days, and having someone who is a lesser pass rusher but more complete against the run AND another quality defender or pass-catcher would be a net win. It's thinking like yours that led to such terrible contracts for so long, and it's not like Burns shows up at huge times. Dude is not a game-changer.

So glad we didn't make that deal. Those type of trades should happen when you're overstocked at a position, you're tearing down the team for a massive rebuild, or you know there's a guy you can acquire (FA or draft) who is a sure fire bet to equal or exceed the departing players production.

Carolina had 35 sacks last year. Burns had 12.5 of them. Haynes had 5 sacks. No other lineman on our roster exceeded had 3 sacks. Our DT's combined for a total of 2 sacks. Our second best rusher was Frankie Luvu (7 sacks). Our ability to rush the passer would be greatly diminished w/out Burns. Now with the new coordinator, we can better utilize Burns and add more players to strengthen the pass rush.

Yeah, we’d be giving up a proven talent for the CHANCE to replace him with a rookie.

What a great deal!

I don’t know why this is so misunderstood. There were 3 really good picks and then FA money of $25-30M a year that we wouldn’t be spending on Burns. It also doesn’t matter if we replace Burns. It’s the overall value you get. Young is our marquee guy now, not Burns. We’ve had Burns for 4 years now and have 22 wins. He’s not Von Miller. He’s a solid edge rusher but he’s not winning us a SB. Young on the other hand, could bring us to the promised land if he’s as good as we hope he is. Pick 36 could be a stud TE and we’d still have 39 to get an Edge or CB. Then, we could sign a FA or two for $10-15M a year a piece. Then, we have the Rams next two firsts to maybe get a Waddle, Chase, Wilson, Olave, etc. and a top OL or Edge or CB.

Sorry, but Burns is not more valuable than 3 rookies at pick 36, top 10 or 15 and top 10-15 and two FAs both making $10-15M a year. Yes, we could fug up all three picks and the FA signings, but Fitterer is supposed to be amazing so what if we hit on all 5 players. The upside is that we get a Will Anderson and 4 more solid starters.

It isn't Burns' fault we've only had 22 wins the past years. That lies on Tepper's decision to hire Rhule in 2020. Rhule was the worst coaching hire in franchise history. No one will dispute that. As soon as Rhule was shown the door, this team rallied and almost made the playoffs w/out a top 20 player at the QB position.

Burns will probably have a breakout season in 2023 if he can stay healthy. The 3-4 defense may make him even more effective as a pass rusher and the DC is among the best in the league right now. I'm looking forward to seeing how he does with the new scheme and coaching staff.

And? We only had a chance at the playoffs because we were in a division with no one over .500.

He’s not a game changer. He’s a solid edge but he doesn’t take over games. Young is far more valuable to our future and no one can argue against that. We got an offer for Burns that was on the level of a franchise QB and we’re about to break the bank on Burns. It’s as simple as that. We would have been smarter to use all those picks to have 3 2nds and 3 firsts from this draft through 2025 even after trading away what we did for Young. Those 6 picks can solidify great talent around Young to make him really successful and we’d still have $25-30M a year for two very solid D FAs and our 3rds and day 3 picks.

Sometimes you need to take a risk. We did that trading up for Young and trading Burns for 5 potential solid starters was a worthwhile risk. We didn’t so c’est la vie, but @KSpan was looking at all the talent we would like to have and realizing we could take 2 of these guys without trading up if we made that deal.
