REPORT: Texans were 'very close' to acquiring No. 1 pick before Panthers

On Monday’s episode of The Adam Schefter Podcast, Fitterer recalled the moments leading up to the team’s acquisition of the 2023 NFL draft’s No. 1 overall selection. He told Schefter that after tabling conversations with Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles at the combine about a possible deal, the pick became an extremely hot commodity—leading to Carolina’s run to the top of the board.

“And then I come back to Charlotte on Monday, and it’s not Tuesday, and I get word that—kinda through secondhand sources—that Chicago may be trying to move the pick right then,” he said. “There might be teams interested. And, as you all know, things are happening behind the scenes. That’s the point where I got most nervous. And I was like, ‘Oh my God.’

“So I jump on the phone, I call Mr. Tepper, I call Ryan and said, ‘Hey, listen. Don’t do anything. Give us an opportunity here to jump back in.”

When he couldn’t get Fitterer to bite on revealing which teams were interested, Schefter went on to state that the Houston Texans were in the thick of it.

“I remember that week, getting word that the Houston Texans were very close to completing a trade for the No. 1 overall pick,” the ESPN senior NFL insider said. “At one point in time, they were very close to getting that pick, I believe.”

Poles really should've traded #1 to the Texans then turned around and trading #2 for us. He still ends up at #9 but gets two bounties in the process.

Bird in hand is worth two in the bush or something like that. No guarantee he could turn around and get what the Panthers offered for #2.

Oh, we were coming to get a QB come hell or high water. Very likely would've been the same or very close to the same deal.

I doubt it. They might have still traded up to #2 but I doubt that trade would have happened in March. Fitterer admitted they paid the price they paid because they could “control the draft” at #1. With #1 off the table, and most likely Bryce off the board, they would probably be more patient and evaluate the other QBs before making the trade. We might have seen a draft night trade with different comp if they liked a QB other than Bryce.

We were originally trying to trade up to #3. We started focusing on #1 because of what it was going to cost us to get to #3.

I don’t think we would have offered DJ Moore for the #2 pick. He’s was pushed this over the top. And at 9 the Bears might still get the best player in the draft in Carter plus loaded up on future picks.

This is the key point.  The draft is weak at WR, so was free agency.  They needed a #1.  Look at the situation we are in--same deal.

So when this all backfires on us in a few years when Young can't stay healthy, we can blame the Texans for not sealing the deal before we could, good to know.

Just think--you will get immediate satisfaction and pleasure by telling everyone that you were right!!!  Or this won't happen and you will change your username.  To assume that you know more than the experts is beyond arrogant and silly.  Your concerns have been expressed.  If being the rain cloud drenching everyone's hope is your thing, you do you.
