Next Season's Goalies- Who Ya Got?

Both Raanta and Andersen are UFAs once the Canes exit the playoffs in the the next 2 weeks or so. I imagine one of the 2 are going to stay and 1 is walking. Here's the point of discussion: who is the free agent target for the Canes?

Issue #1: Raanta and Andersen bring are ranked 3 and 4 in GAA among UFA goalies. So whoever comes to Carolina will not be packing a 2.4 GAA in their luggage.

Issue #2: What's your desired sample size? You want someone who played 25 or more games this season or are you willing to put someone in net with not much time on the ice this season?

Who ya got?

I'd be willing to give a look at Adin Hill, Korpisalo and Alex Lyon. I'd consider Varlamov, but he's 35 and not sure he's got many seasons left in the tank. And, yes, I know we've seen Lyon and he was not good after showing like a stud with the Checkers and Chicago Wolves.

Kochetkov is not ready for prime time. If the Canes roll with Raanta and use #52 to fill in those back-to-backs and maybe catch a start against a lower tier team here and there, okay. But to pull the same alternating starts between Raanta and Kochetkov makes this a .500 team.

Unfortunately, our play in the last month is already there.

Give him another offseason, he’s young and Russian.

Korpisalo is the one I would target, not sure the Kings are going to let him leave town easily though.

I like Hill and his youth, but not sure he is one that doesn't benefit from a solid defense in front of him more often than not.

We can't roll with Raanta or Andersen as a 1a because they are going to miss long stretches with injuries and Koochie still isn't quite ready.

I'd say if Nashville was really in full rebuild mode then I'd go after Saros or even Lankinen, but after trading away a lot of key pieces they are hanging in there for that last WC in the West.  I'm not sure they will want to do any trading.  Askarov isn't ready for the NHL either.

I look at SV% more than GAA as far as comparing other goalies against the canes goalies. Canes limit teams SOG and grade As more than most teams, so any goalie who plays for us looks pretty good stat wise. Case in point Anderson and Raanta won the William Jennings trophy for goals against, best in nhl in 2022. Are they the best really? Nope.

An even better case in point is look at the excellent stats of Nedejkovic and Mrazek when they played for the Canes vs the poor play they’ve done lately on other teams.

So I look at SV% for the season and also for career, in addition I look at GAA just for this season as a secondary consideration. Based on that criteria I would take a hard look at Hill and Korpisalo in your list of UFA’s, and keep Raanta.

But really we would have been fine with our current goalies if we had scorers and that is just not going to change until we get one or two more. Do we really want to count on goalies to save each game with us struggling to get more than 2-3 goals for most games?
