Chris Mortensen: Bryce Young is the pick, they all love Bryce Young

i just made a true statement.  thats all. if young stays healthy and becomes an MVP we will feel stupid.

And if we take Young and he doesn't, we'll feel stupid, especially if Stroud becomes an MVP level player.

It's not any kind of argument.

Could also blow the lid off this draft if the Texans aren't goo-goo gaga over Stroud.  Ryans may want a *potential monster like Anderson.

Then that could throw AZ into a tizzy without their expected man there.  Could trade down w/SEA for example.

And the Colts would still be screwed hehe.

1-CAR Bryce Young

2-HOU Will Anderson

3-SEA (from AZ) CJ Stroud

Now THAT, that would be wild.

I enjoy "wild" drafts, but generally only if we're not part of the "wildness" 😄

I would support whoever they pick. I just find the timing strange if this is the case.  We were reportedly the most aggressive team at the combine, after which we made the trade.  That's when CJ Stroud was showcasing and when Bryce wasn't even throwing.  Not trying to say anything positive or negative about either guy, just the timing to me doesn't really match up with them saying 'let's go get Bryce' after we sat at the combine and were so impressed with something there that we wanted to trade--all while Bryce isn't doing anything

According to several reports (including Joe Person of the athletic), the deal started to be discussed Monday & continued throughout the week.CJ worked out on Saturday...

I understand the logic of, they traded because they saw CJ workout, but it doesn't appear to be the case since the intent to trade started at least 5 days before he even worked out.

On top of it, Fitt & Reich both said the tape was more important than the workouts.

So I doubt that the workout was the reason for the trade, although without the insight from Joe Person of the athletic, it would be logical to think so.

People keep saying he's Mahomes-lite but there's a BIG difference in the arm strength.

I agree, Mahomes arm strength was actually 1 of the first things ppl raved about before even the play making ability.

aside from size (which is not a big deal to me), Bryce's arm strength is his biggest concern.

It's not bad (better than Tua IMO), but he definitely has many balls dying down toward the end on long passes. or they look a bit wobbly...

Do you think arm strength can drastically improve with more weight & muscles?

This. He has a very average NFL arm. Honestly, probably below average if I'm being honest. In comparison, Mahomes has an elite NFL arm.

I get the comparison stylistically. My concern is does the style translate without the hose? That I'm not sure about. Burrow makes it work, but Burrow has a good arm too. Not Mahomes' arm, but he has a plus NFL arm and can throw that same ball from virtually any platform. I think there's a substantial gap in arm talent between Burrow and Young. I think Young is closer to *gulp* Teddy when it comes to pure arm talent. Can Mahomes' style work with Teddy Bridgewater's arm? That sounds like pick six city to me, but we're gonna find out one way or the other soon whether it's in Charlotte or Houston.

Burrow is interesting because honestly I think Young in college has stronger arm than Burrow in college, it was a real concern with him coming out. But Burrow has noticeably improved his arm strength in the pros it’s really impressive.

I never saw the arm strength concerns with Burrow in college. Honestly, his arm impressed me. I thought it was roughly NFL average in the pocket but he was definitely a very good thrower on the run. That's what impresses me about Burrow and Mahomes. Somehow they're able to seemingly throw the same ball whether they're standing in a perfect pocket or running for their life throwing across their body. You're not supposed to be able to do that.

Burrow struggled a bit with sideline throws from the far hash, I was legitimately concerned about him in college. I had the same worry about him that you (and I) do about Young.

I do think that’s the question for Young more than anything else. He is hitting windows in college and making these throws you aren’t supposed to but does it translate with his arm. I know most QBs arms get stronger when they get to the NFL but the staff feeling comfortable with that translating is the big deal for me when talking Young.

I don’t think it’s fair to expect him to get a Burrow type boost but I don’t think this is as strong as his arm is ever going to be.

    • I don't get the Hunter hate. Just imagine his ceiling if he stopped trying to be this 2way freak and focused on one side of the ball
    • 100%.  You have to play the cards that are dealt.  Not the cards you wish were dealt.
    • I'd say its definitely going to be addressed this off-season.  We went into the last draft with a roster of RBs including:  Chubba, Blackshear, and Miles Sanders. We picked Jonathan Brooks in the second and still signed Rashaad Penny afterwards.  Fast forward....One turned into a top 10 back, 1 is injured/out for most if not all the '25 season, 1 retired, 1 will either take a huge paycut or be cut, and the last is a restricted free agent. We brought in Mike Boone as well. Add him to the free agent list also.  We need a physical option.    Which qualifies:  Ashton Jeanty(Boise St): Overall ranked Top 10. Almost 2k yards after contact, 28 tds. Would take our first rounder. My money would be on an NFC East team selecting him. (97.2 PFF run grade) - 121 forced missed tackles.  Omarion Hampton(UNC): Ranked everywhere from 20 - 59 overall. Consensus #2 back after Jeanty. He'll be a second rounder. 1,222 Yards after contact w/ 15 tds.  (90.5 PFF run grade) - 72 forced missed Tackles Kaleb Johnson(Iowa): Ranked from 38 - 69 depending on which media outlet you prefer but generally #3. 2nd/3rd possibly. 1,060 Yards after contact w/ 21 tds.(86.7 PFF run grade)- 66 forced missed tackles Cam Skattebo: Ranked from the 50's - 104. Every mock I do he ends up BPA at some point. 969 Yards after contact w/ 17 tds(92 PFF Run Grade). Probably the best receiving back of the group. 81 forced missed tackles.  If the '24 and '25 draft classes were combined, IMO the rankings would be, in order: Jeanty, Hampton, Brooks, Johnson, Skattebo. I wouldn't take one high but I'd take one for Chubba and Brooks insurance.
