If Forbes is there at our 2nd, sure would be hard to pass him up.  He would lock down the nickel spot immediately and gets his hands on a lot of balls.

I think he's the second best CB in this class. Absolute freak ability ball skills

The following helped me see the depth of talent at the Panthers top areas of concern (after QB) in rounds 2 and 3.  I include round 1 to predict who might be off the board.  I have included my needs list.  Thought I would share-(lotta cutting and pasting--hope it is legible)

MHS’ prioritized list of Panther Needs entering Draft as of 4/1/23:
1.    Quarterback
2.    Edge Rusher
3.    Cornerback (nickel)
4.    Wide Receiver depth
5.    Inside Linebacker depth
6.    Defensive End (3-4, 3-5t) depth
7.    Offensive Tackle (Swing) depth

FIRST ROUND EDGE RUSHERS

FIRST ROUND CORNERS

FIRST ROUND WIDE RECEIVERS

image.png.c8d7b730b9811c1305d7bf57addbe30d.png

Round 1:  I have 4 QBs potentially being drafted, 5 Edge Rushers, 4 WRs, and 6 CBs (questionable).  That would be 19 of the 31 players selected, so there are players who could fall into the second round.  In my opinion, the following players could possibly fall past pick 31:
•    CBs: Deonte Banks, Kelee Ringo
Would that cause the Panthers to forego an Edge Rusher and grab a CB?  I do not think so.  I expect the Panthers to take an Edge Rusher in round 2.

SECOND ROUND EDGE RUSHERS

SECOND ROUND CORNERS

SECOND ROUND WIDE RECEIVERS

Round 2: With Five Edge Rushers going in Round 1, expect a lot of trading between nights one and two by teams wanting to move up into round 2 to get that edge rusher because there are literally 12-14 quality edge rushers capable of starting early.  Not all are perfect fits for the Panther's 3-4—the Panthers could harness this momentum and trade back into round 2 and still get a good edge.  There are 7 quality Edge players that are given round 2 ratings.  The CB market is not that impressive, but if Banks and Ringo fall as predicted, it gets better.  Although we need a WR, Hyatt could go round 1 and Downs just does not meet our needs, imo.  However, it seems that there are three-four DE’s perfect for the Panthers that have “Plus Starter” ratings from NFL.com.  They are (in no particular order):
•    Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Kansas State
•    Derrick Hall, Auburn
•    BJ Ojulari, LSU
•    Isiah Foskey, Notre Dame
I just do not see how we go WR or CB in round 2 when we need an Edge—the second round is loaded with quality Edge rushers.

ROUND 3 EDGE RUSHERS

ROUND 3 CORNERS

ROUND 3 WIDE RECEIVERS

image.png.e46527bac2508adc0411bb1e498b73ce.png

Round 3:  At the end of round 3 might be the best time to get the CB.  We need a nickel CB to keep Horn and Jackson on the outside.  Last year, teams like the Bucs were able to force the defense into situations where the Panthers had to play Henderson or Taylor on the outside vs. the #1 WR.  Not ideal. While I prefer a free agent CB to play the nickel (remember, there will be times when Chinn is in the big nickel, so this player is not a starter—but needs to be better than Hartsfield was. However, there are some decent gems at WR that could be there at the end of round 3.  Some names of interest at each position are:
•    CB: Williams (Syracuse), Turner (Michigan--some have him going much earlier), and Kelly (Stanford)
•    WR: Rice (SMU), Mimms (Oklahoma)

This why we agree this year.. Because your breakdown confirms everything I’m seeing in mocks.. Again not a science but it right in line with my thought process this year.. The way it’s falling is Pass rusher/ CB 2nd round and  Cb/ WR 3rd round picks being very impactful for us..

Luvu has played OLB and ILB in 34, but has more snaps at OLB.  I think his skill set is better suited for OLB personally.  I see ILB as a big need in the draft and hope they pick Jack Cambell.

Burns, Shaq, Campbell, Luvu would be a pretty good group

I like Jack as well but why not play B Smith he’s on the roster and good enough to preform this year probably better then Jack.

I would love to trade back with on of the 4th rounders to gain another pick or two.  If so, NT for sure and possibly a 5-tech.  I'm not drafting a corner for injury concerns. Horn a Jackson just need to stay freaking healthy.

I’ve read that twice now Horn and Jack just need to stay healthy…Is Jackson’s injury in late Nov enough time for him to play in Sept-Oct. it was an achilles injury. Also if they haven’t stayed healthy last two years don’t you plan ahead instead of having to play CJ a lot this year bc Jackson never fully healed would be disastrous we can’t do it,  we need a CB In round 2 like DJ from Michigan we need someone who can play day one. If they happen to stay healthy this season we’d have exactly what we need for the future DJ is probably gone after this year based off his contract, if that’s not the option we atleast need to sign a solid CB like Rock ya Sin to help out DB room moving forward because our two best are injured a lot and we need to be prepared for similar situations based off the last two season . Proactive not Reactive would do us wonders.

That is another position that is a bit unclear right now.  We have McCall (56.8) who was decent in limited duty last year and Roy (54.0), who was slightly below average, according to PFF, my only measure of their performance.  Both weigh over 330 lbs.  Then we sign Tuttle, and everyone says he will play nose between Brown and Williams.  I do not see that.  I see YGM (pass rushing specialist on the inside?) and Williams in a rotation with Tuttle and Brown.  If so, are they going with McCall and Roy at NT?  I would hope not.

Evero 3-4 I'd bit different, Tuttle was signed to play nose.

surprised to see Johnston as the only WR above 6’, and he’s a medium sized 6’3”. No big guys this year.

How big are you talking? If you're wanting 6'7" or about that size, you need to look at the TEs.

AT Perry is 6'4"

Bryce Ford-Wheaton is 6'4"

Keytaon Thompson is 6'5"

Jake Bobo is 6'4"

Michael Jefferson is 6'4"

Justin Shorter is 6'4"

There's at least 4 other prospects at least 6'4". There's also a lot of guys 6'2" or 6'3", which just a a little while ago was considered big.

We have capspace to sign a edge guy.

I rather sign Frank Clark and draft a starting DB opposite of Horn.

Defense would be pretty much set with those 2 positions cleared up.

I see your point.  But if we have a draft deep at Edge and TE (I would argue this:  CB is fairly deep as well, and one is likely to drop) I would hate to sign a veteran on a big contract--we are going to have to make a few more moves, however, and this may play out as you describe.

I actually like the idea of trying out Roy at NT. That's what he was in college and I think his natural Position. He's so big and wide (built like a square), I think he might thrive. If it works out, that give balance on either side with Tuttle and Brown.

I looked at the free agent DT market, and there is not much available at NT.  I think they are going to have to go with McCall and Roy--and you bring up a good point. NT is not the same as a 3t.

Great work here…thanks

Not sure I would be done at TE dough

Anyway…QB and Edge are my top 2 and this isn’t a deep draft.  Get those 2 and I’m good

QB obviously. After that I have our needs as CB, Edge (2nd only because of the quality FA's still out there. I think we sign 1 pre-draft), ILB. If we can get a day 1 starter at 39 in either of those 3 positions, I'm stoked. With our 3rd pick we should be able to land a talented NT or TE (deep draft), or even a WR. I think that Fitterer is likely to trade up into the low 80's to gran one of these.

A guy I have my eye on is Tyler Scott WR Cinncy in the third or fourth round

In the second I see us A) trading down b) edge c) TE unless a stud WR or CB is there

He is a sleeper with tons of upside  Good call

Great post!

Fitt did a good job in free agency for us to go BPA.

I hope BPA is CB who can play opposite Horn. Djack coming back from Achilles is not reassuring & didn’t even like him b4 that injury.

CB is a bigger need than we seem to realize--even if Action Jaxon were healthy, which he is not.  I was hoping for a free agent--but crickets.

I’m with u on this.
We need more passrush but I think there is quality left in FA to addressed that.

Horn is the only CB I’m confident abt & he has struggled to stay healthy thus far.

Healthy Djack has good ball skills but Is overrated IMO. I’m not confident in him at all, especially coming back from Achilles. Not sure how we paid him over Gilmore.

ideal scenario, Cam smith slides to 39.

So the plethora of bodies at one positions is inadequate, but just enough JAGs at other potions is fine?  I'm not against drafting a corner, but we have guys for days there, just not ones folks here are high on apparently.

    • If Clemson wins, they have a tiny shot at sneaking in.  I’d say if Gamecocks win, that shot is much smaller than Clemson’s was Gamecocks got problems Clemson doesn’t.  Ole Miss and Bama.  Both ahead of them, with the head to head win over them.
    • Yeah, I spent a lot of time living in Ashe County, in the Fleetwood area... 20 minutes from West Jefferson, 20 minutes from Boone... unless it snowed and then you had an hour and a half each way. And I did ski reports for radio stations back then, so yeah, I had to go in to work on those mornings. Moved to Greensboro and 25 years later, I really miss the snow. I loved how it looked, how quiet it made the world sound, that wonderful fresh smell in the air. I know, though, that it's just nostalgia and it would be rough as heck on me now. Still, maybe once the kids are all off to college the Mrs. and I can go back to the mountains.
    • Yeah, and he both deserves it and has the ability to be worth it. Offensive linemen can still be functional and good well into their 30s.
