Let's talk Terrace Marshall

Panthers GM Scott Fitterer said that the team is "excited" about third-year receiver Terrace Marshall, who is "about ready to takeoff."

His comments came during the NFL combine, roughly a week prior to the team's trade that sent D.J. Moore to the Bears

WHAT IT MEANS:

Marshall struggled to find the field in his first season and started his second season off slowly, but he did manage to finish the 2022 season with 28 catches for 490 yards (which ranked second on the team behind Moore) and his first career touchdown.

He improved his yards per target from a concerning 4.6 rate as a rookie, all the way up to a strong 10.4 mark in his second year.

Marshall's overall outlook should be improved with the departure of D.J. Moore.

That's what I expect.

And he'll be our 4th best receiver.

If he puts up those numbers as our 4th leading receiver we have the best offense in the NFL and Marshall leads the league in yards per catch. The Chiefs had the #1 passing offense in the league and their 4th leading receiver had 42 catches for 568 yards and 5 TDs. Jaylen Waddle led the league at 18.1ypc.

Just keeping in mind, there's only been four 4000 yard rookie QBs in NFL history. Yeah it's a pass happy league now and yeah there's an extra game but setting 4000 yards as the floor is asking a LOT.

And we are also arguably one of the best situations in league history for a #1 overall QB to go to, with a somewhat proven pass first offensive minded HC, top OL and modern rules favoring passing. Maybe my expectations are too high but with that in mind and the extra game, 4000+ really should be the target. Or at the very least 3500-3700+. 3000 is a very very low bar. Our QBs last year had a combined 3250 passing yards.

I just think folks around here are starting to set themselves up for disappointment with some very lofty expectations. I hope you're right, but damn... you're basically setting the bar at one of the best rookie seasons ever. Yeah, that's a LOT to ask.

Kind of but in context it's not all that far fetched.

All the top seasons are pretty recent and plenty of guys the last few years in the 3700 range, add an extra game and our team's situation being much better than most top QB picks go to and anything less really is a disappointing rookie year from a 1st overall pick we traded so much for. That being said, he could break records his rookie year and still suck long term like Baker/Winston or he could disappoint this year and still be an elite long term franchise QB. The expectations are and should be high for several reasons.

I'm far from convinced he's gonna do much more than he has, but he's going to get every opportunity to prove the doubters wrong.

No kidding. I don’t get the hype. He has 1 TD in 2 years in the most garbage time of garbage times down 42-7. Even Mayfield looked good at the end of that game because Cincy pulled starters.

Also, I don’t know where the “doghouse” talk is from and trying to equate him with Bozeman who wasn’t playing.

Marshall played 63.5% of the snaps. Outside of OL, only DJ Moore played more snaps. This idea that he never played was debunked by me in his rookie year and now again this year.

OP mentioned his biggest issue, IMHO, separation. I know that Next Gen Stats said he did well but that’s based on receptions/targets and he was two more than the minimum targets. He had a few long catches which led to it looking like he could separate but his target to snap ratio is lower than all other WRs last year even Chosen. That to me says he doesn’t get open enough to get more targets.

It should be obvious that almost everyone in here mentions that he was in the dog house yet he played 63.5% of the snaps even though he missed 3 games. If he played all 17, he would have played almost 80% of the snaps. He wasn’t riding the pine like Bozeman, he was our WR2 out there most plays. He didn’t get open enough. DJ played 50% more snaps but had triple the targets and DJ was the focus of the D.

As a fan, a breakout would be awesome but folks thinking he’ll replace DJ’s stats. To replace DJ’s stats, his snap count % better be 200% next year, which seems doable with Chark, Thielen and Hurst.

I think the chance for a rookie QB getting 4000 yards is a lot better than Marshall replacing DJ’s 1100 yards per year.
