John Ellis on Stroud v Young

It's funny how apparently you're not allowed to compare any quality of Bryce Young to Mahomes or Brees, but CJ Stroud is totally the next Joe Burrow lol.

He has some of those qualities but i think they are different. It's not an absurd comp though. Burrow is a very good young QB. But two things he is not. 1 a hall of famer and 2 a two time super bowl champion before the age of 28. Young has been compared to everything from that to Steph Curry to Michael Jordan to Bruce Lee. Need I go on?

I prefer Mahomes to Burrow honestly. Even injured Mahomes can beat Burrow, you cant teach play making but you can teach someone to stand in a pocket and throw a ball.

You prefer the one that is Young's ceiling?  No way?!?!?!

Stylistically I see the Mahomes comps for Young. But in terms of arm talent? There's a big difference.

Yeah, that's why is Mini Mahomes or Mahomes lite.  He lacks Mahomes elite arm strength and about 4 inches in height.  Honestly Mahomes' arm talent is a huge part of what makes him so special.

Mahomes without that hose is probably an INT machine. The dude is a cheat code. He's Favre without the turnovers. You're not supposed to be able to have it both ways. That style is supposed to come with turnover opportunities.

I think people are undervaluing 5% more arm strength. Just picked that number but these things increase in value exponentially when you get to the upper levels of performance. Maybe it is 2% but maybe it is 10%.

I believe a small gap in ability can make a real difference when the margin for error narrows way down. Like against better competition.

I did watch some of Young’s pro day. I saw him take the running start on a deep ball. Like, shuffle step up and then step into throw.  Okay which first of all, if a guy needs a clean runway to make a long throw he won’t find much of that in the NFL.
It is the arm when you get down to it. You can have the best of the rest.

But arm is such a big part of it I hate even making that comparison even as a “lite” version.
It would be like calling Levis Cam lite without the running ability.

I get it.  It's just playing style.  Running around in the backfield, eyes on back of head, 6th sense type of plays.  It will be interesting to see how it translates without the arm talent.  I mean Young's arm is capable, but definitely not elite.

Yeah, Mahomes is an absolute stud but his cannon of an arm is a big part of it. Burrow doesn't have as big of an arm, but the similarity that both of those guys share is that they can seemingly throw the exact same ball whether they're in a clean pocket stepping into it or running for their life falling away. I think Young has some of that in him and in terms of arm strength he's a lot more similar to Burrow than Mahomes.

Honestly don't think there is that huge of a difference. All the tape I have watched has alluded to Young's ability to make throws no matter his body positioning. He might not have the same zip on his balls but the scheme will adapt to him and I feel he will be asked to run more than he did in college. Which could be a good thing or bad thing depending on the worry on how his body will hold up.

That's what we're talking about here though. Arm talent.

    • I think it will be hard to not go edge in the second if we go QB first. Say you have Starks, one of Bond/Egbuka, and maybe one Edge (don't have a name to throw out that is end of 1st round projected and may slide)... do you still go Starks? Just curious. I haven't looked into starks much, as I've been focused on QB, WR, and DL prospects.
