Punts, arrrrrg!

Ok, so it is horribly obvious that our kick and punt coverage is awful to say the least. Being that Baker can kick the crap out of the ball and that there is no penalty for punting out of bounds, why do we continue to allow ourselves to get burned on almost every punt in the field possition department? Punt the ball out of bounds as far down field as possible, punt coverage becomes irrelevant.

It is very difficult to angle a punt out of bounds and get maximum distance. Trying to do that is just asking for a 10 or 15 yard punt out of bounds. When when he does that, people like you are screaming that he can't punt.

He holds onto the ball far to long as it is. I have timed it to be around the 2.25-2.50 from him receiving the ball to when he has punted. I am almost positive I was reading about a draftee punter and they were using his 1.3 sec get off as a negative. If thats slow Baker is stagnant.

Punting it quick is not a good thing. Why would he punt it quick? The cover team wouldn't be down to cover the punt as quick and he wouldn't punt it as far. From what I could tell, Baker probably had his best hangtime of the season against the Bucs. That is the most important stat as far as baker is concerned.

Have you been watching his punts. Last year I know he had at least 2 blocked that I can remember. I think he had one blocked this year. But he gets dangerously closed to being blocked on almost every punt. He is a huge liability and its not like his punting is the best to compensate for the risk. We should have brought in a punter in the off-season to compete that could handle KOS as well so we could potentially punt (no pun intended) Lloyd and free up a roster spot.

What are you talking about? The punts he had blocked last year were due to breakdowns in the blocking scheme. He is punting the ball very well right now. You think we should be pooch punting the ball out of bounds? That doesn't make any sense. Why would we intentionally give teams the ball at midfield?

I said no such a thing. I said that he holds the ball for too long. I doubt that something that is fixable without screwing with his punting (i don't know never been a punter) but it seems that if you mess with a guys timing it could throw off his kick. Most likely we need to just find a replacement. The punts last year were a product of both his slow release and our crappy blocking (Rosario!!!). This year the near misses have been almost entirely his slow releases fault. He is a liability and as I said its not like his punting is the best to take that risk. I say at least there should be an open competition next year with KOS exp a big plus.
