I'll be thrilled if Chark finally stays healthy and proves that he can be elite but the he's here because the Lions gave up on waiting for that.

Chark's injury history is also a big concern to me. I suppose we will have to keep our fingers crossed and hope that the bad luck will play out and take a positive turn, if that happens he could be special..

Best case scenario - He stays healthy and is a huge help to our rookie QBs development.  1 year deal, so he either leaves next offseason to a team that offers a huge contract and we get a decent comp pick.  Or we're the ones who offer the big contract and he stays with us after proving he can play.  We keep a pretty good weapon for our QB.

Worst case scenario - He gets injured again and we can get rid of him after this year and move on to the next receiver.

I like both.  Good job Fitt.

thats an assumption

its very well possible he chose to come here because of the opportunity not only in scheme but in targets to make the most out of a prove it deal

he would be competing with a healthy Jameson Williams and all pro ASB for targets.

Lions wanted him back, but they arent hurting for a WR like we are

The problem with your worst case scenario is that it then severely hampers our rookie QB's ability to develop in year 1 if his best WRs are Thielen and TMJ.

That's really why I'm not a fan of this move, too much of an injury history to trust him and we don't have a good enough WR room to withstand him missing half the season.

I wasn't looking at the WR moves this year in terms of them, but in terms of what they can/can't do for a rookie QB.  I absolutely LOVE the Thielen signing as I think he's the perfect safety valve for a rookie with his game, but I just struggle to see how this one helps us too much, especially if he can't stay on the field.

Absolutely need to still draft a WR in the 2nd, this signing doesn't change that in the slightest for me.

He's on a one year prove it deal. He's literally betting his career on A) staying healthy and B) the success of a rookie QB. I'm sure Reich sold him on his offense and Chark's role in it. Chark had been pretty vocal about wanting to stay with the Lions. I'm betting we simply offered substantially more $$$.

Why? The roster is wide open for playing time. brad pitt film GIF

He could easily step up and become out number 1 in training camp it’s there for the taking.

trade down

Actually a really good idea to add another 2-3rd rounder.

I can. Thielen is a 33 year old short term stopgap. Chark is an oft-injured talented guy on a one year prove it deal. Hurst is knocking on the door of 30 and can easily be cut after two seasons.

These FA signings are about short-term bandaids. The draft is about long-term solutions.

I would imagine that the offensive skill positions are very much on the table at #39.

Naw we have young talented drafted young talent who needs to be coached up from coaching and Vets. Tremble-Hurst TMJ learning from AT like his buddy just did in Minnesota. Offense is probably not on the board based on where we stand now we Need a DE and a CB and it seems there will be a couple of starting caliber CBs when we pick at 39.

Yeah plus we still don't have any potential alpha #1 WR for this season. We could get that at #39. Thielen is a slot guy, Chark is a downfield threat as a solid 2nd WR but we still don't have that do-it-all #1. If the draft doesn't fall that way we can absolutely go BPA but if there's a WR sitting there with that #1 potential we absolutely will seriously consider him. Even if we take a guy and he doesn't turn out to be a #1, like you said both guys we signed are more stopgaps or prove-its, if we draft a guy who doesn't work out as #1 he could still be our longer term #2 or #3 option.

At 39? Let’s look at being a complete team as possible this year we still have holes why double down on a position we have vets and young guys at when we need defensive help bad. It seems alot of people are disregarding our defense. We need to add to both sides of the ball that pick definitely should be defensive so we can continue to build a complete roster.

We'll see. "Winning" the off-season oftentimes doesn't translate to winning on the field.

I'm hopeful but I'm not crowning anybody just yet. It all ultimately comes down to how well this QB selection pans out. These guys have hitched their wagon to this pick with that trade.

What’s the alternative to winning the off-season? Your just saying things no one is crowning anyone we’re excited which is natural we’ve filled out our roster in a much stronger way then we’ve seen in ten years of free agency. Yes they’re hitched to the pick you have to go get the QB you want we’ve seen that for the last ten years straight we’re the only team not making that move until now. I’d rather swing and miss, instead of let’s see who’s there at 9 or run it back with Sam one more time hopefully he’ll get even better then JAG he’s been his career. Naw I’ll pass it’s time to get a top talented qb and coach him up let Frank use his offensive master mind with someone who can play at a high level. We’ve done a marvelous job upgrading our entire roster if you don’t win in the off-season when do you upgrade your team? It’s extremely exciting times in Car these days.

I'm talking about scenarios just on this signing alone.  But yeah I get what you're saying.

The worst case scenario obviously wouldn't help our rookie QB, but we can't say for sure that it'd hurt his overall development.  Cause there's also other players who might step up and do what Chark wasn't able to do.  So that's why I didn't include that in the worst case scenario.

Chark doing bad does not instantly mean our QB's development is negatively impacted.

But Chark doing good does most likely lead to helping the QB's development.

You're ruling out a defensive guy with the second round pick?

Not entirely...thats just based Fitts with the "sexy" draft comments. I left out Josh Downs as he would fit that category too.

I actually wouldnt mind if we went with Trenton Simpson, Drew Sanders or Jack Campbell at MLB...or Cam Smith, Ringo @ cb. Lots of choices with that 2nd pick. Who ever we bring in for visits will be telling.

Another guy I wouldn't mind is Will McDonald... Carter II out of Army also. I didn't even mention DT, S, or Oline but we do have options at that pick.

Fitts did look a little uncomfortable/undecided discussing our inside linebacker position.

id rather be the #1 option on a team with the top rookie QB selected where the team has aggressively put pieces in place coaching and personnel wise to have the rookie QB succeed, than try and compete with Williams and ASB for targets.

by all accounts, the lions wanted him back, but they already have elite WRs and won't throw the kitchen sink at him to keep him. but this is a very fruitful opportunity. Look at what Theilen has said as well.

i could be wrong about all that, but i do think you are boiling an assumption way down into something that just isnt true

agree to disagree, i said my peace on the matter

    • I have no clue how much he will be on the field. I hope he plays well and doesn't get injured. Keep in mind that rookie rbs are typically hampered by struggling a bit with pass protection assignments. It seems it is a bit more of an adjustment from the college game.
