Natalie Miller (aka Verge): per her sources, Panthers moved up to #1 to take Bryce Young

It presents an interesting negotiating dynamic.  The rookie wages at the top of the draft are pretty well established.  Offsetting language is the only possible sticking point to the rookie deals.  The team could play hardball but neither side could really afford to mess this up.

But people are stupid, so who knows?

It can also be a down the line when that rookie contract starts to come up issue. Sure the payments are low now... but the balloon payment could be killer, yanno? Team(s) killer in Watson's case.

Bryce Young is simply the best QB in this draft. He can throw in the pocket and he can throw on the run. He makes plays out of nothing. He has that "it factor".

I think most want Stroud because of the size factor which is fair. But there is no debate that Bryce has a little more in his toolbox because of his ability to throw on the run and make more dynamic plays.

Im happy with either at QB honestly.

If they are dead even in our evaluations and we truly can't decide then maybe. But if it's a 1a/1b you 100% just stay at 1, don't fug around, and take the guy you like a bit better.

I suspect they like both Young and Stroud.  Question is, what do they like better...Young by himself or Stroud plus the #12 pick.  That #12  pick could replace the #1 WR we just lost.

Or maybe Houston gives their 2024 #1 as was rumored they offered Chicago.  Even with Young, they are probably picking in the top 5 again.  We could possibly snag Marvin Harrison next year with that high pick.

Lots to think about.

I don’t understand this thought process. Why would we care if Houston or Indy knows about which QB we want? Sure with Houston if we want to trade with them, but why would they want Young that bad versus getting Stroud? I’m being told by the Huddle that Stroud is a no brainer, but also being told by the Huddle that we’re talking up Young because he’s the guy Indy and Houston wants? Why would Houston/Indy want Young over Stroud when Young obviously wont last in the NFL because of his size(not my opinion but many others).

I prefer Stroud, but enough people seem to think Young is a no brainer. That's not what the Huddle thinks, it's what analysts, former players and talking heads think. Believe me, the Huddle's talent evaluation factored exactly 0% into this thinking. If another team absolutely is head over heels for Young, then we have an enormous bargaining chip if we're threatening to pick him. Hell, we could even pull an Eli Manning and draft him at #1, and then trade him to Houston for the #2 pick plus plus.

Secondly, no way we trade to Indy at 4. We’d basically have to pick between Levis and Richardson and we didn’t trade all the way up to 1 to draft the 4th best QB prospect.

There's a scenario where we wanted Richardson all along. We knew he wouldn't last until 9, and we ran the numbers and assessed that the net cost will be less to move down to 1 and back to 4 than to move from 9 to 4. I don't necessarily think that's the case, but if you believe any of the "Carolina loves Richardson" rumblings, it makes sense.

I don’t believe this and the main reason is the Panthers didn’t make the move until after they saw Qb’s at the combine. Bryce didn’t throw but CJ did however. Secondly, I know they say height is not a factor but that’s coming from a HC that played Qb at 6’4 and a Qb coach that was also 6’4. History shows Frank prefers taller Qb’s.

The potential is there for some awkwardness and hard feelings for sure.

The same Verge who said this about deshaun Watson?

We were clearly pretty close to signing him. He'd probably be a Panther rn if not for the guaranteed contract.

Idk why y'all keep trying to discredit Nat. She admits to having no sources in the organization and she's still more plugged in than any of you.

I think the idea that the Texans would give up #12 or a 2024 1st to us in order to trade up 1 spot is a bit of a fantasy.

I wouldn't read too much into the timing with the combine. We were most likely negotiating with the Bears for a while before the deal got done.

And regarding Reich and height -- it's such a small sample size that it really means nothing. He only had control over who his QB was in Indy as HC and he inherited Luck/Brissett. Then when did he really even have a realistic chance to acquire a legit short QB? Rivers made sense and did well there. Wentz was with him in Philly and made sense to take a shot on and same for Ryan. What short QB did he pass over for those guys? Wilson? Didn't seem like ownership/front office was too interested in investing a ton in the QB position those last few years and Reich is on record saying he has always liked Wilson.

Im new here but I get the feeling most are done with Verge in his/her sources...

I personally have no problems with insiders. Nothing else to really discuss so why not talk about some fake news ESPN does it all the time.

It's the Huddle.  If anyone is wrong about anything they go crazy.  Most sources are using educated guesses, but it is still a guess.  Not to mention a lot can change between now and draft day.

If Young had a 'wow' arm I'd be more on board. It's just NFL average.

His floor is terrifying - and my job isn't even on the line.
