After a conversation with Bears GM Ryan Poles the other night, it sounds like the trade was almost THE TRADE. Poles told me he had significant discussion with Houston at number two that could have made him trade down twice in the top 10—with both the Texans and Panthers. He wouldn’t be specific on what broke down, but he did say: “I thought there was an opportunity to do something historically pretty cool with a trade from one to two and two to nine. That had potential to add more draft capital this year, and then the possibility that you’re sitting on three ones in the following year. That had my attention. But my gut told me to trigger on it now. At the combine, I thought those quarterbacks did an outstanding job in their interview process. A lot of teams felt really good about some of those guys, but as you get further away from the combine, maybe there’s a bad pro day or something that turns teams off.”

For clarity it would have been the #2 this year and their #1 next year.

Wow, that indicates the Texans had flirted with parting with a 1 next year to move up 1 spot. However it doesn’t say if Chicago would have given up a 2 this year or something else of value in return, which seems likely.

Also made it sound like the Texans didn’t give a strong degree of confidence they’d actually pull the trigger, meanwhile Scott Fitterer seemed pretty aggressive in getting it done ASAP, as to not play around and let someone else swoop in.

Ive also read somewhere that the Raiders inquired about moving up and they were told the price was identical to our trade, except it would take the 2025 First Rounder as opposed to a player (D.J Moore in our case).

Couldn’t be happier that we made the move when we did!

Had this gone down and we traded up to 2, this means we were comfortable taking Stroud or Young. Seems there was a never a doubt that we wanted to go up and get a rookie this year.

Bears are dumb, I would’ve taken that and and still do a panthers trade and got more overall.  Good chance either Texans or panthers could be top 10 next year if not both with another good QB class coming if fields doesn’t improve

I hate to say it but I don’t think the Panthers are thinking give us a five year window not rushing Frank but based off the moves, the staff, and our division honestly who’s that much better then us. And I’m speaking from Frank’s pov Atl and Ridder Baker or sorry ass D Carr who got sent home from a team with elite talent around him. We’re all about even the division goes to the best coached team.

I think Bears GM just kind of talks out his ass tbh. If there was greater value on the table he would have taken it.

I don't know, I think he and Fitterer have both been fairly straightforward,as much as you can be.

At the beginning of the combine, he Poles stated he preferred to have a deal done before the start of free agency, because if he acquired any players as part of a trade, they would have a clearer path on how to attack free agency, in addition to knowing what other draft capital they had.

Around that same time Fitterer was telling everyone to expect a sexy draft.

It seems there has been consistent reporting that other teams inquired and thought the price was A. either too high to move up or B. Non-commital and wanted more time to vet out their options.

Meanwhile our brass came in hot and struck while the iron was hot. It truly was a win-win deal for both sides.

If this is true the Bears are DUMB. I take that deal all day and then flip #2 to the Panthers for another haul.

Not necessarily. It all depends on if you believe we are interested in more than one QB and how their pro days may affect those evaluations. They may also not have been able to get DJ Moore who was a key to the trade. If the Panthers favor one QB above the other, they may not be interested in moving up in the draft until draft day after the 1st pick. Too many variables in play this time of year to say a team is dumb for getting a guaranteed haul vs trade and hope.

Now if the Panthers are truly equally interested in 2, then that trade up for a 24 1st would be a nice little item to get back, especially if it ends up being an early pick and MH jr is available.

Houston only wanted to trade to number 1 to stop somebody like us from jumping them, I highly doubt they looking to trade now.

This only really speaks how desperate we was that the bears knew they could trade again back to 9.

This makes literally zero sense.

If they were willing to give up next years first to a team they knew would be taking a non-QB if they kept the pick, just to keep someone else from jumping them, now that someone did jump them for a QB, they would be willing to give up the same, if not more, to then jump that team.

I'm still not on board with it unless we're 100% sure they aren't taking the player we would take if we stay at #1, and even then, I still want #2, 2024 first, and then either #12 or their 2nd rounder this year as well.  If they want to pick their QB before we do, even if we know it's not who we're gonna take, they have to pay through the nose to get that right, period.

    • KC has a very good defense this year. It is 5th overall. Yes, still worse than last year, but their offense is considerably worse. Their passing D may be their "weakness" but they still allow fewer than 20 ppg. BY completed several deep passes yesterday, and he was able to threaten downfield in ways he didn't seem capable of before the benching. I'm not necessarily worried about his ability to connect deep anymore. What to me was impressive was that he did all this without a run game. We used the pass to set up what little running success we had. Wild.
    • Solid and fair assessment.   I will say, one of the big things I noticed yesterday was that he wasn't shy to step up into the pocket in the face of pressure.  He's trusting the IOL.  And they took care of Chris Jones yesterday.  We had clean pockets but also good success rate vs. pressure which just hasn't been the case with Bryce.   If he has more confidence the OL gets it done and he can navigate and step up for throws, that's huge.  It's one of the biggest things that's held him back.  He was previously bailing quickly and just too easily throwing away or making dead plays.     He was finding his 2nd to 3rd reads within structure/without bailing in the pocket.  That was nice to see, as much concern I have with him.  And the overall limitations will always be there. Time to back it up this week against the Bucs.
    • Suddenly the Cowgirls look like our best chance for a win remaining. I think the Bucs are playing better than the Falcons of late.  Our lone game versus the dirty birds is in the ATL where we always struggle.  The Cardinals are marginally better than I thought they would be. We are not beating the Eagles, they are starting to roll. I'm saying two at most, next week at home versus the Bucs and the Cowgirls.
