He was successful financially, but was he successful as a starting QB?

Yes. He's in 3 different halls of fame, holds a few records, played a long time in the NFL, and has been considered one of the best QBs of his generation. I would say that is successful.

Sure he was successful personally but he was not a successful nfl qb, which is kindof what we are discussing here but I think you knew that and moved the goalposts once you googled his stats

Come on now.  The NFL Hall of Fame?  I see where he made college football and Canadian Football....  Would you be happy if our number one pick made the Canadian Football Hall of Fame???  I also don't think he was one of the best in his generation or he would be in the NFL Hall of Fame.  You are seeing the "pound for pound" quote by Madden which is really just referring to his height and toughness.  NFL accomplishments are what we are looking for in the top pick.

Looks like he holds more CFL than NFL records 👀

I saw another Canadian hall of fame. It was a city or just generic sports hall of fame. As for being happy if the #1 pick also made the Canadian hall of fame? Just depends on if he did that before or after his time as a Panther.

Lol. Just admit you were wrong

It's still a long and successful pro career as well as having a winning record as an NFL starter, 38-28, which is a better percentage than Cam Newton's record.

You can make the argument that as an NFL player, Flutie was nothing special; he just threw for 14,000 yards and 86 touchdowns in 13 seasons.

However, when you look at his combined career numbers, pooling the NFL, CFL, and USFL years, you can’t help but take notice. He’s played in 241 games, only five less than Fran Tarkenton, the NFL's all-time leader for games played by a quarterback.

His 58,179 yards, 369 touchdowns, and 4,286 completions would put him third on the NFL’s all-time list for all three categories. I think that’s pretty impressive for a guy who was too short to play quarterback.

On May 15, 2006, Flutie announced his decision to “hang up his helmet” at the age of 43 and retire.

During his NFL career, Flutie passed for 14,715 yards, 86 touchdowns, and 68 interceptions.

He also rushed for 1,634 yards and 10 touchdowns, including the NFL record for most rushing yards after age 40 with 212.

Flutie’s total career stats, which include his time in the CFL and one year in the USFL, is 58,179 passing yards, 369 touchdowns, 237 interceptions, and 6,759 rushing yards, and 82 rushing touchdowns.

There are a lot of other articles out there too, so it seems a lot of people think he was a successful QB and that includes in the NFL though his greatest success came in other leagues.

Anyway, that's enough of Flutie. Here's to Ahlers 2023 in at 1

Whether the guy (Carr) is right or not, you don’t need to be a winning qb to know what it takes in the NFL.

10 years is plenty of time to get a handle on it. I’d say he knows more than anyone here that is simply a fan. Ex college players included.

edit: I still don’t agree with him though ha ha.

lol ok ok.  Look I think you know Flutie isn't the hill to die on.  I have nothing against Young and will be happy if he is our guy.  I just hope he has a better career than Flutie if that is the case.
