What Veteran QB Do We Sign to Mentor the Rookie QB?

There is nothing a "mentor" would offer that McCown wouldn't. This isn't Mike Shula.

Now a capable back up is a good idea.  But a young QB with McCown, Reich, and Caldwell doesn't need a mentor signing.

The relationship between a coach and a player is significantly different than the relationship between a player and another player, especially if that other player is closer to Stroud/Young's 21 than McCown's 43. There is something to be said for a QB having another experienced veteran QB on the team who he can lean on/ask questions and have be more of a good cop whereas a coach needs to hold the player accountable and be more of a bad cop.

That said, I don't think having a mentor at QB is a big deal. Having veteran leadership in general is a big deal but it doesn't have to come from the QB position, can be any position on the offense.

Can we just leave Cam alone at this point? Only deal I would sign is for 1 day to retire a Panther

If people are fine with players like Joe Flacco, Nick Foles, and Teddy mf two gloves I see no reason why it’s crazy to suggest Cam. Cam is the best Mentor out of all of them and would command the most respect, he was a big influence on this new generation of QBS.

We got mccown as a QB coach,  reich as our HC. We have vet QBs who are our coaches. We don’t need a vet Qb on the roster.

It never hurts to have more vet leadership, and a lot of teams with coach’s who were former QBS in the nfl still carry vet QBS due to this advantage.

I love Cam, I was even on board in bringing him back last year, he's my QB.

But he's not the right guy to be the backup to the #1 pick, at least not here.

That's WAY too big of a distraction for a rookie QB, you can't draft him and then sign our last #1 pick and an MVP to be his backup/mentor.  It just would create a level of awkwardness when your backup QB is more loved by the fan base than the #1 draft pick.  It's one thing to do it a couple years ago when Darnold was struggling and then got hurt, but you can't do it to a rookie #1 draft pick.

It would be like the Lions trading up to #1, drafting one of these QBs and then re-trading for Stafford.  It would just be too awkward of a situation to want to put your #1 draft pick and future of your franchise into.

Sure it could end up working out in the end, but it's definitely not setting him up for success from the start.

Jimmy G likely wouldn't be wanting to step into a situation where he might be overtaken as the starter by week 1 or at worst, know he's only a placeholder for 1 season at the very most.

Jimmy G is about to be 32 years old and has a long injury history.  No matter where he goes he's not the franchise savior.

Nobody said anything about him being a franchise savior.

But given his history and actual level of QB play, he's not signing with the team with the first overall pick, he's going somewhere that he'll be locked in as the Week 1 starter as soon as he signs.

There isn't a single team in the NFL that he can sign with right now that can guarantee him the starting job.

The Raiders can and will

Short of them finding a way to trade up and get Stroud or Young, their Week 1 starting QB is going to be a Free Agent signing.  They're in a much more "win now" mode than any of the other teams looking for a QB not named the Jets (who also could give him that starting job if they don't land Rodgers).

Beyond them, the Commanders and Bucs can more or less give him that guarantee as well.

After that, signing with the Colts or Falcons would give him a significantly better chance at starting than over the #1 pick in the draft as well.

    • He made some excellent throws but he always has made some excellent throws here and there. I don't know what to think, which is what I was apprehensive about. Is he going to have a decent downfield game? Because okay Legette dropped one, but someone was giving stats prior to the bye or during it where he had two downfield completions and one of them was the jump ball that is just launched and fingers are crossed that our guy comes down with it, and yesterday we saw that again. The Russell Wilson school of downfield passing.  I don't feel like that is sustainable, but at the same time you have to do Something to make the defense understand they have to defend that downfield throws. Like i said, confused.  I guess I'm going to review the game for myself and look closely at his mechanics and stuff because if he actually fixed that stuff it explains the better throws. And that has been my biggest objection, or what I see as the thing that makes or breaks his chances, that unorthodox dropback and tippy toe action and not having his feet set which limits velocity etc etc.
    • The negative Nancy in me (or objective?) says that they had a bye week to prepare for the Chiefs. However, it’s one thing to have a good plan and it’s another to actually execute it. For all the flack he’s received (from me as well), Bryce seemingly has put his head down and worked his tail off and his play is giving me hope. The first 18-game Bryce showed no progression whatsoever. He gets benched, comes back, and has shown steady progress every week he has started. I think I’m starting to see what the Bryce lovers and unconditional defenders were saying all along, and I hope he can show that on a regular basis for the sake of our QB1 position.
    • Yeah, we could still very well end up 4-13 with the 2nd pick.   I think LVR has the inside track for 1, with only a JAX team as a team on docket that could be beatable.
