So why now for Chicago?

I understand the Panthers wanting to get this done, but why didn't Chicago wait?  I would think there would have been a bidding war as teams identified the QB they wanted and Chicago could have gotten higher draft picks.  They did acquire a vet WR before free agency but while he is talented, I do not see DJ as so valuable not to have waited.  What are the Bears fans saying about this?  Going from 1 to 9 is a big drop off for them.

From what I've read, they wanted Moore pretty badly, and wanted it done before free agency.

Because they wanted to get this done before free agency so they could know exactly what they were dealing with in terms of compensation. Plus, Moore was a great selling point.

It's the opposite - Chicago dictated the terms of this deal and, quite frankly, got everything they wanted.

They wanted DJ Moore so they didn't have to go after a WR in FA (a very poor FA market btw).

As for him 'not being that valuable' he'd had 3 1,000 yard seasons with poor-middling QBs throwing him the football. I don't think he's elite, but he's a very, very good WR1 and those are hard to find.

It was mutually beneficial for both teams to get the deal done early. Us so that we know our QB option and have time to replace DJ, and them so they can strategize for the draft knowing where they pick, and they can enter FA knowing they don’t need to pursue a WR1

Having $75M in cap space, it's good to have your QB and WR1 locked in so you can be aggressive in FA and throw money at Defense and O-line, then go BPA in the draft.

I also don’t think it’s clear to the league what direction the Panthers wanted to go in despite the reports. Panthers had leverage in that they had a lot of other options on the table Chicago needed to preempt if they wanted DJ.
