This.

Idk that I’d hate it. He’s one of the few prospects I’d actually like watching in workouts tho to get a better feel for his pass catching. He’s obviously huge, solid athlete and made some impressive catches. But his low productivity raises some questions and I don’t think you can blame it on the offense

Georgia had a deep tight end pool so he had to share the catches with lots of other guys. He seems to me that he would be a huge matchup issue in the secondary. What did he run ? 4.65 sticks in my head. What safety or even linebacker wants to keep up or tackle him.  Just the size differential is worth drafting him. He would contribute immediately and could eventually be a starter. I suspect we are bringing in a vet tight end through free agency.

Assuming we keep pick 39 and Darnell Washington is available (Mayer went in the 1st) do you take him.

I’m a solid YES. Just curious what others think.

It's a deep draft for TEs .He would be fine to take...or could take one later in draft .

Many options at te .

Mayer is best at settling into zones and using headfakes and crafty route running to get open. Great hands and knows how to play the position. Well rounded.

Kincaid has excellent body control, fights for extra yards, and has some of the best hands in the class.

Laporta is almost identical size as Kincaid, also has excellent hands, ran a 4.59 at the combine, and has the best moves after the catch of this year’s TEs. I’m really hoping he’s our new TE with our 2B pick.

Darnell Washington is around TE4 for me. Elite measurables. He just doesn’t seem to play as fast in pads as he looked when running his 40. He has incredible size and strength, but I don’t think he’s very explosive. Worth a day 2 pick imo.

Zack Kuntz is probably my next TE. He’s nearly an inch taller than Musgrave and completely destroyed the combine. He finished top or top 3 in pretty much every event. For all the talk of Washington’s size, Kuntz is the exact same height and only 9lbs lighter. If you’re going the tall target TE route, I prefer Kuntz to Musgrave but there’s not a big gap there.

That’s my top 5.  Haven’t seen them all though

Musgrave has great size and a great athletic background.  Dolphins FA Gesikie is a good comp but he never really took off.  Musgrave also is coming off a knee injury if I am not mistaken.

I am sure teams are looking at him cuz the guy is very talented

Musgrave grave simply doesn’t have a lot of output to show for overall.

I do think LaPorta is the one really being slept on after Mayer and Kincaid. The dude just produces and mauls.

Some other like Schoonmaker, Kuntz, Kraft and Whyle don’t look shabby either.

What little I’ve seen of Musgrave left me thinking he seeks to avoid contact.

I don’t think Laporta and Kincaid are far apart. They are nearly carbon copies of each other size wise. I’ll give Kincaid a slight edge catching through contact and Laporta the edge after the catch. Just by the slightest of margins both ways though.

I kinda agree…man Musgrave is a guy for whatever reason has taken a ton of punishment in college.  Watching his tape he is getting destroyed over and over with big shots.  Amazing he was not injured more.  Worries me

Imo people are greatly exaggerating the need for a tight end. Don't get me wrong we obviously need one, and an explosive pass catching one would be awesome to have. But there are what, five of those in the league? Plenty of teams just have bodies at tight end and still produce plenty. Every one is locking us into one at 39. If that is the best player on the board at that pick then obviously it's fine, but don't need to force it. This team just needs weapons in general. If there's a WR you like better at that slot it would be a fine pick also.

Problem here is that we don't have NFL"bodies".  We have stone hands and blind and clueless rout runners

Do not underestimate the importance of a good TE--yes, there may be 5 elite TEs in the league, just like there might be 5 elite QBs in the league.

the best TE plays for the 1 team that won a super bowl.  Imagine Mahomes without his TE....

Imagine Cam without Olsen.

You have to like Washington's size which makes him a huge target. I would have no problem taking him at 39. Learning to run downfield 10 yards and turning around to catch a ball isn't exactly hard to master. And let's be honest with his size and speed if he gets loose in the secondary he is gone. Then again I like some of the other guys as well.

Only two TE's in Panthers history have mastered that unless you count the Jeremy Shockey year.

    • I think it will be hard to not go edge in the second if we go QB first. Say you have Starks, one of Bond/Egbuka, and maybe one Edge (don't have a name to throw out that is end of 1st round projected and may slide)... do you still go Starks? Just curious. I haven't looked into starks much, as I've been focused on QB, WR, and DL prospects.
