Panthers are now the betting favorite for the #1 pick

So what happens if they give up tons of draft capital to go get a QB, and he fails? Or he gets injured? Or a key position (to help him develop) gets injured?

Plus as of right now, you'd be bringing a young QB to a team without a strong receiving corp (who's the #2 or the slot?), TE group (Tremble and Thomas are not legit receiving threats), and questions at the RB position (are they going to overpay Foreman or just roll with Hubbard). What about o-line depth?

A miss at QB could mean those ‘few draft picks’ turn into missing out on a better QB prospect next year.

If we had some fat college donkey and his college coaching staff I’d be more worried about that. This coaching staff in this division won’t be picking in the t10 even if we roll with Darnold for another year, and the 2 QBs everybody wants are going top 3-5 unless they have terrible seasons and turn into pumpkins in which case we won’t want them anyways.

what if the panthers don’t trade up, take a really fine LB, and he becomes a breakout star?

they continue to wallow in the pits of mediocrity is the answer

also lol “depth” which is the 53 positions on the roster don’t have to make bankable players before a team makes a run at a QB?

If they do this and it's a miss, it's going to be a very painful miss...

Not necessarily. Multiple teams have had a lot of success after trading a lot to move up for a QB who wound up busting. 49ers, Eagles, Rams all very recent and applicable examples. If Reich is the real deal we’ll figure out QB sooner or later even if it doesn’t turn out to be whoever we get in this draft if we trade up.

You are assuming people won’t be back here next year saying that no QB in 2024 is worth our first round pick.
You are also assuming we will have a QB better than this year fall to us next year.
Pretty obvious that, unless the team falls off a cliff, we probably won’t be drafting high enough to get a top QB in the first round.
Unless every QB coming out in the 2024 supposedly stacked class is good, they won’t be, then we will be right back where we started every off-season. Arguing the same darn thing.
We have no idea if any of the QBs next year will be good and if they are we will probably still have to pay to move up and it will be expensive.
Panthers won too many games this year and really put themselves in between a rock and a hard place.
I don’t envy the FO of the decisions they will have to make.

If I had to hazard a guess I'd say that most of this board is drowning in debt.

I'd say it's an incorrect assertion to equate how a person feels about trading up/standing pat in the draft with how they run their personal finances.

The NFL is a league that has proven time and time again that going with the "safe" option gets you nowhere. I understand you have a pathological aversion to using future draft capital to move up, but sometimes you must, as they say, "risk it for the biscuit".

Good point! Based on a very small sample size, it looks like the opposite.  Rams went to the big game with Goff and won not too long after acquiring him (yes they traded him away to do so).  The Eagles won one with Wentz (injured at the time) and went to another one not too long after.  The Niners made a nice playoff push this year and if Lance was healthy who knows?  The last few teams that have traded up for a top 3 QB used their extra cap space wisely and had good coaching which made them very competitive.

Why?

Have you not been paying attention to who makes up this coaching staff? These are guys who knows offense and knows QBs. If there's a coaching staff that you should trust with deciding on a QB, it's this one.

Frank fuggin Reich

Jim Caldwell

Josh McCown

Just these guys alone should be enough to warrant confidence in this team's ability to choose a good QB. It is for me anyway.

then I'm sure your family would hope you weren't driving a brand new Porsche that you purchased with a home equity loan and you skimped on auto insurance

So you’re saying you should always drive a run down crappy car so you didn’t have to worry to get hit by another car?

Or they pick 3 other positions of need and become a better TEAM this year. Then another good player next year.

But... they also pick a QB they didn't have to mortgage the rest of the TEAM for. Because they're such great coaches, they don't need the #1 pick to get a good QB that'll work for a really good team - see San Francisco.

Lol we are fans cheering for a football team, OF COURSE a majority want them to be aggressive.  Most football fans want immediate gratification, it's why the 7 year process (a joke) pissed off so many people.  It's why a future 1st apparently holds less value that a current.

No you drive a car that you didn't have to take out a second mortgage to buy. Might not be a Porsche but doesn't have to be a run down crappy car.
