I full expect Darnold to be our bridge. He is the right guy for it. He is humble, good for the locker room, and understands his role. 

One of the podcast I was listening toward the end of the year they were talking about Darnold. They went as far as to say that Darnold may become one of the best backups in the league before its all said and done. I honestly think it was the Steve Smith podcast, but I could be wrong.

To me, there is no shame being a backup in the NFL. He is so young, it could allow him to develop and he could be starting somewhere at age 27 or so.  His issue is mental--whether that be processing or confidence, I dunno.  But you make a great point-he is humble and will work team first.

Remember Derek Anderson? Yes, he was significantly older when he came to Carolina, but he was a very good backup to Cam in so many ways.

He was projected by many to weigh ~185lbs at the combine. Once he showed he can put on weight, now it’s not his “playing weight.” Ridiculous. He’s 21 years old. It’s plausible his playing weight could be 215lbs in his sophomore year. 
 

He’s the best at playing QB in this draft.

yeah this has been a thing around here for a while. People get so laughably consumed in whatever picture they saw or video they watched that it borders on an outright rejection of the evidence. It’s only outpaced by the medical savants who jump in to tell you whose being “rushed back.”

The rules do help lower weight QBs but sometimes lineman just can’t help themselves when they get close. I think the talent is there but he’s the one player in this draft I’d be worried about staying healthy on almost every play.

The rules didnt help tua.  Young is going to get hit and every so often he is going to get severely slammed to the ground.  It just is what it is.  The question can that frame handle it over 17 games multiple years.  I doubt personally.  The kid is the smallest qb in modern history to be drafted.  If he works out it would literally be the first of its kind.  And lol at EC saying he can play at 215.  The dude struggled to get to 204 and then didnt do any of the drills.  If that is his true weight then I am sure he has no problem weighing at his pro day or interviews.

I think there is already a sign that we like a QB in this draft because we did not really pursue Carr and we have not shown Darnold interest.  I think they have a guy---or two---or three that they feel comfortable with.

And to all of you who have dismissed Young because he is small--Doug Flutie was this size.  Kyler Murray is this size.  Russell Wilson is 5'11. Sonny Jurgeson was 5'11.  Not many to choose from, but the new NFL may not depend on height as much as we are conditioned to think.  While they may not be the most successful QBs in the league, I guess the point is, it has been done, but the population size is rather small (pun intended).

FWIW, Reich and McCown are 6' 4".

He has the intellect, some intangibles and seems like a great kid. Those positives provide only a very limited shield from the violent realities of the NFL.

Doug Flutie is a flawed comparison. Wilson had an inch and much more weight. Murray has mobility and speed that Young lacks. Furthermore, I have my doubts about Murray's longevity as well.
