The Ravens can’t be this dumb? They’re a smart organization right?

I personally had forgotten about Cousins. I guess the real difference is the tremendous amount of money that is involved here.

The Ravens don't want to further and solidify that new precedent with such an amount of money. They are arguing (and betting) that Watson's contract is an outlier. We'll see who's right. But you're exactly correct: Cousins' deal, though seemingly paltry to Watson's contract, was the first fully guaranteed conteact. It obviously didn't really set a precedent, but I guess they feel that Jackson's contract could, being that it is coming after Watson's, and probably before Burrows', Herbert's, etc.

I think Cousins deal DID set a precedent that led to Watson being able to piggyback off of it.  So now there are 2 deals where a franchise QB hit the open market and both were fully guaranteed deals.

Also, the numbers were very large back then.  Cousins deal put him in the conversation for top 3 paid QBs in the NFL.  It was more than Drew Brees and most other QBs at the time.

Just curious, is it possible to make a deal after this years draft for Lamar?  We keep 9 and draft an additional weapon around him, top TE or WR and then have to give up 2024 and 2025 firsts. which hopefully would be late first round picks.  Does that change any thoughts about him or is that contract still too rich?  Not even sure this is doable but would be interesting if possible.

So if Lamar gets the non exclusive tag what does this mean for the suitors?

Does he still get to choose what team offers him a contract or can a random team just go after him?

Washington/Atlanta would be my guess for his next team.

It means he can negotiate with anybody but the Ravens have the ability to match any contract offer.

If they choose not to match, he goes to the new team and the Ravens get two first round picks.

He has to agree to the contract offer but he doesn't get to choose which team makes one.

It set a precedent of guaranteed salary in literal terms, but it did not necessarily set an expectation of a guaranteed salary if you get what I'm saying.

Also, remember that was four years ago, and even with all the hoopla, his cap hit for 2018 was 12.6% (and 2019, 15.1% and 2020 10.6%).

So yeah it was kinda the same, but still very different. The NFL is afraid that an LJ contract will actually set a trend, particularly with several high-level QBs coming up, not to mention Mahomes' re-upping.

Ravens already offered him 250m with an actual guaranteed percentage higher than either of those 2.

No they didn't. It's widely been reported that their final offer was 133 mil guaranteed.

This has been about guaranteed money the entire time. He wants somewhere in the 200 mil range of guaranteed money.

If Kyler Murray got 189 mil guaranteed, Lamar is definitely right in seeking 200 mil guaranteed. Everybody complaining about how much Lamar wants then let him test the market. I guarantee you a team will offer him a much better deal than 133 mil guaranteed.

Agree partially. I mixed up the final result with one of the other games, but not the details.

Our offense was ineffective, but so was theirs until a late turnover. And Jackson was nothing special that day.

That part I remember 😆

We didn't beat Burrow though. The Bengals doubled us up.

Bengals part was sarcasm!

Also, Lamar was not looking good otherwise it would have been a bad loss. I think Lamar had already been hurt or was banged up. Personally, I know he can be great but I think we’re seeing what we saw with Cam’s shoulder. The shoulder is worse for a QB as Lamar could ease back on the running but if the threat to run diminishes, is he a good enough pass only QB. You have to be careful rushing him and worry about spying him. If defenses don’t have to do that receivers aren’t as open and pass rush isn’t so slow. It may take a few years but it feels similar and missing the end of two consecutive years puts up a bay signal that the Ravens are obviously taking serious.

So he can't choose the team it has to be the team that chooses him?

That's pretty much how it is for all of free agency.

An agent can reach out to a team and say "Hey, would you like to negotiate with my client?" But If that team isn't interested, there's no recourse.
