Report: Panthers' diverse hires partially motivated by compensation rules

Having a problem with the policy suggests one hasn't thought it through or one is just looking for something to have a problem with

A team wouldn't hire a candidate just because of their race because they actually need to be good to get a promotion.

There is no incentive to hire just because since then you aren't staffing in your best interests.

“Tepper, I’m told, took note of that,” Breer writes. “And it was a motivator—in addition to helping the cause of Black coaches—to focus the hiring of Reich’s staff, particularly at the higher levels of it, to diverse candidates with upward mobility. So after the Reich hire, Carolina zeroed in on Denver defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who was right there with Vic Fangio as the most sought-after prospective DC league-wide, and Eagles QBs coach Brian Johnson for coordinator jobs.

“They landed Evero, couldn’t quite get Johnson (who’s in line to be promoted to offensive coordinator in Philly) but wound up with well-regarded Rams assistant head coach Thomas Brown as OC instead. And, of course, the first reason to write big checks to get those guys is the belief that they’ll be first-class lieutenants for Reich, the way Nick Sirianni and Matt Eberflus were for him in Indianapolis.”

Well, if we fail...

We fail...

And people are going to look back at this. I still think hiring Ejiro was the wrong move solely for moving to a 3-4.

So let me get this straight.  If you hire the person you feel is the best candidate but they happen to be a minority that being a minority was the only reason because of the compensation in picks you may receive later?  Bullshit.

I started to have my suspicions we were consciously factoring it in after we hired Adrian Wilson too. Whether we truly are or not, can't say. All of them seem to be excellent and deserving. It's obviously not the main reason. But as a conscientious tiebreaker? Plausible. And honestly the league must have partly hoped for that by instituting the rule.

I've always thought it was a smart rule. Give minorities a chance to shine in higher profile assistant positions. If they flounder, you set your team back and get no compensation. If they earn a promotion elsewhere, you get valuable picks to compensate for losing an important member of your team.

What a hit piece. People in those positions have to be here for at least 2 years to count. I see potential that this staff is massacred at the end of next year.

Just to play devil's advocate.

Wouldn't this discourage teams from signing minority head coaches because it gives an advantage to other teams?

Yea, seems like they would give some incentive for a team to hire a minority HC. (Besides avoiding be bashed in the media for not)

But geez...there are people who just want to tear others down, they complain about everything.  Tepper took a hit (unfairly) for not hiring Wilks.  He pointed out what a diverse admin staff he already has.  So, they (primarily Reich) went out and found the best coaches they could.  There happen to be minorities in the mix...so now they want to criticize him for hiring minorities?  It is a stupid comment.  Makes no sense.

The disparity between white coaches and black players has always been huge, and getting more black men (and other minorities) is very important since they make up the majority of the player base.  We hired great people and some of them happen to be minorities.

That's a win-win.  First- we get great coaches who will do a great job.  Second- if they get hired off after year 2, we get some picks.  Great!  But the most important thing is that we get much better coaches.

If we have success this year, and we get a lot of our coaches poached, that's a great sign for other assistants.  Come to Carolina to get on the fast track to a HC gig.  Will help ensure we have high quality coaches, even if they come in for a year or so.

I didn't want Wilks as our head coach, and I'm black. Tepper did take an unfair hit on that decision. If he had won against Tampa Bay and won the division, he would be our coach right now. I believe the game that cost him the job was the Tampa Bay game. That was Tom Brady's best game of the season, and he is supposed to be a defensive coach. It is also possible that Wilks was offered the job, but he didn't want to get rid of Al Holcomb, who, in my opinion, doesn't need to be a coordinator of anything.

Agree with this.  You may have two guys you are looking at and all other things being equal, the minority under-represented guy gets chosen.   To suggest we are hiring less than qualified candidates so we can get a draft pick some time in the future is nonsense.
