Gantt indicates the Panthers should bring in Carr

I remember when Darin Gantt was celebrated on this board for his work with the Rock Hill Herald some years ago.  Since he's become an official employee of the Carolina Panthers he opted for the vanilla paste rather than the cuddlefish (Southpark reference).    However as I was taking a weekly check on the Panthers website I came across his latest mailbag.  I did find it interesting because he definitely insinuated that the Panthers bringing in Carr makes sense.  I would have to think that Darin Gantt does have incredible access.  Even though he is a fluff writer now, when he indicates strongly that the Panthers would likely bring in Carr for a visit after the combine you take notice. If the Panthers we're disinterested he would just give a vague androgenous answer.  Here's the link to the mailbag..

We have got to sign a FA, there's no way around it.  There is not a day 1 QB in this draft, Young being the closest.  That being said, the choice is a stop gap or go big for a guy that can be effective and lead this team to heights not seen in many years.  The Bridgewater, Darnold, Mayfield model of 'salvage' QBs is done.  It's either a guy who is a mid-tier QB who can bridge the gap for a rookie for a couple of years while keeping the club competitive or shell out the big bucks for a known commodity.

Those are the options.

Would love Carr, but way over priced.

Gantt has always been a “Panthers need to know their place, do the safe thing and be happy trying to win 9 games” kind of guy

he probably feels the big trade coming and is getting scared

this is his form of damage control

That doesnt make any sense.Who is he creating damage control for ?

I’ve seen quite a few outlets/sports reporters say we would be the perfect situation for him. Kind of hard to disagree.  And although I’d prefer a QB from the draft, I think we’d be fine with Carr.

He would have the best coach and best defense he’s ever had. Not to mention a solid WR1 and already established run game & offensive line. Would it be enough to win a Super Bowl? Time would tell. But it wouldn’t be the end of the world like some on here make it out to be.

No.  Dude is a complete headcase.   Can he still play?  Yes.  Is his heart still in it?  No.  He's in a short-term money grab position and why the Jets are the perfect suckers--uh, team to trade for him.

Brissett might not come at that cheap of a price. Upper tier backup QB's aren't usually at value prices anymore.

This knowing he'd be starting at least some games with Watson's pending suspension on the horizon and still only signed a deal for $4.6M deal.  I don't think $10M-$15M for a open competition at QB1 is unreasonable.  The Panthers won't make him the unquestioned QB1 at the negotiating table, that would drive up the price.

Some of that is market dependent, however. There have been plenty of offseasons in the past 15-20 years that backup QB prices spiked up.

    • I think it will be hard to not go edge in the second if we go QB first. Say you have Starks, one of Bond/Egbuka, and maybe one Edge (don't have a name to throw out that is end of 1st round projected and may slide)... do you still go Starks? Just curious. I haven't looked into starks much, as I've been focused on QB, WR, and DL prospects.
