New MLS Cup Playoffs Format

Looks like it’s slowly becoming the NBA playoffs…

- Nine teams from each conference

- Eight and nine are wild cards and play a one game elimination

- First round after the wild card is best of three with no ties.

Not sure I particularly like the play-in idea but I love the best of three format if it was for the entirety and not just the first round.

Though the play-in did inject some good late season drama for the NBA.

The Champions League format of a two-leg tie with aggregate scores, and a single elimination final I think would work better here. But I suppose this is America and it's gotta be different for the sake of being different.

Best of 3 series is catering to the average American sports fan who doesn’t follow soccer in Europe and would probably not get the 2 leg tie and aggregates. Best of 3 is more cut and dry, or should be, to American sports fans

I find it very difficult to believe we won't be one of the top 9 this season as we finished 9th last year so I'm all for it
