Same. I would trade Fields for a haul and draft Young if I were the Bears GM. We seem to be the minority though.

The way the GM sounded in his interview I came away convinced that they may indeed take a qb at #1. If I'm not mistaken the current staff did not draft Fields so there's that.

I missed that interview. I know most of their messaging has portrayed shipping the #1 pick and riding with Fields. Most of their fans seem to want Fields to stay. I don't think Bears fans (or front office staff) are the best QB evaluators.

That all may be true but that's the impression he gave off. He was noncommittal about Fields as the starter going forward.

I just don't view them as wildly different QBs in 2023. It seems with QBs, there are many people who rely on the eye test. That's the kind of perspective that sells you on a Justin Fields, convincing you he's your franchise QB, when he just led you to the #1 overall draft pick.

I don't fault you for your overall assessment. I am guessing you have watched Mitch since college and are a fan of his so that obviously gives you more insight into your "eye test". I am just saying using per-game statistics as a comparison tool allows you to say crazy comparisons. Like Andy Dalton is better than Cam Newton, or Jared Goff and Josh Allen are roughly the same if you look at their 2019 and 2020 performances.

Looking at raw stats is just as bad as only using the eye test.

It’s their overall career numbers, and I wasn’t selective in choosing stats.

Completon %

Passing yards

Rushing yards

TDs

INTs

Fumbles

That’s a pretty good base level to determine a QB’s production.

FWIW, I don’t want Trubisky to be our next QB. I just don’t want to pay Carr $35mil a year for what would be modestly better performance than what Trubisky would provide.

pulled from Patherswire  I suspect the passing yards for the year is a mistype lol

Panthers owner David Tepper present at meeting with free agent Derek Carr

If the Carolina Panthers ultimately chose to make what’ll be a pretty expensive run at Derek Carr, then owner David Tepper should probably get a close-up look at the free-agent quarterback. So, he did.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Tepper was present during the team’s meeting with the 31-year-old passer on Tuesday. Rapoport and colleague Tom Pelissero were the first to report on Carolina’s intentions to talk with Carr at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Ind.

2022, although the final straw between Carr and Raiders, saw the ninth-year veteran earn his fourth career Pro Bowl nod. He finished the season with a 60.8-percent completion rate and 35,222 passing yards—both the lowest marks since his rookie year in 2014.

Mentioned this elsewhere, but I'll say it here as well...

The impression I get is that this weekend is "crunch time" for the quarterback discussion, at least as it relates to Carr.

They'll take the next several days to discuss what they want to do so that when when they speak to Carr on Monday, I expect they'll either make an offer or tell him they're going another direction.

If I'm right, Monday or early next week's likely becomes "sh-t or get off the pot" time.

Like Trevor Lawrence did the previous year? Look what happened when they actually infused some talent/coaching around him…

Yep.

Coaching matters. Sometimes it matters a lot.

(when your previous coach was Urban Meyer or Matt Rhule, it's one of those times)
