Question about Matt Corral

We will probably never know if Corral was a Rhule pick. We probably will have a little bit of an idea moving forward.

Fitterer came out after the draft saying Corral was a developmental pick. Corral didn't like that and said it was his goal to compete for the starting job publicly. Being that Fitt himself said he was being developed for the role publicly and what happened injury or not, this GM planned to let Rhule do what Rhule does and play Corral in the future.

That same GM is still here and so is the owner that signed off on bringing Corral in to meet ownership and the staff predraft and then signed off on moving up to get that exact player.

There's no doubt about it. The Panthers organization believe in this kid even though others don't.

2022 was not a weak QB class. You had several QBs that can start in the NFL and win from last year. The issue was there was no QB worth a 1st round pick last year and the top 5/6 were being overrated.

Pickett, Ridder, Howell, Corral, Strong, Purdy, Thompson, Oladokun, Zappe, Kelley, Glass, Eleby, and Coan are capable of winning consistently at the NFL level.

The 2022 draft class was deep in NFL talent, just not Manning/Stafford/Mahomes/Roethlisberger talent.

The 2023 class does not have a single winner and 2 potential Blaine Gabbert/Baker Mayfield career backups. This draft class of QBs is like having Baker Mayfield, Tim Couch, Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Cade McNown and Akili Smith all going in the 1st round. There is no Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Donovan McNabb, or Daunte Culpepper to save the 2023 class.

The same people who drooled over Baker Mayfield, Tim Couch, Josh Rosen, and Akili Smith are the same ones drooling over Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Will Levis, and Anthony RIchardson.

Don’t ever stop being you

Truthfully I think our "desire for a QB" could possibly be a smoke screen to move the pick and if not they'll BPA defense, which at #9 should be one of the two monster DEs, hopefully Myles Murphy.

Do that, top five defense here we come as coach publicly stated that he wants, even before QB.

If anybody can coach Matt Corral up to his potential it would be Reich. Don't get it twisted either, this GM and owner want desperately to see what Reich can do with Corral so in comes the cooperative effort between coach/GM/owner.

Eason is here to back up Corral and defense or trading the pick will be the order of draft day.

Corral is as talented as the top QBs

It was a calculated risk moving up for Corral having insight into the next draft class.

They probably felt back then that moving up to get a free falling Corral would be better than investing in guys with equal or more question marks than Corral in this draft.

I like the run at QB that only pushes star defenders into reach.

History will tell that story but right now it matches the narrative of being one of the worst in recent memory.

Ultimately that is a 5+ year discussion and not a year 1 discussion however.

I’m gonna go on record and say this is absolutely false, lol. Will SOME of these qb bust? Of course, they always do. But you’re defending and saying Akeel Glass and Jack Coan are capable of winning NFL games? They’re not even on NFL rosters. Believe me, I’m not super super high on this class either. But I’m not gonna sit here and pretend it’s worthless. Let me ask ya, if teams and everyone thought Lamar would be this, would he have made It to 32? Is that OUT OF THE REALM OF POSSIBILITY for AR15? Cj Stroud looks to at least have a floor and ceiling of Dak, which isn’t the worst thing. Bryce is positively polarizing and just has that “it” gene that guys like …. Every single qb in 2022 class doesn’t.

Is this a troll post? Am I missing something?

Are there a lot of "IT gene" QBs that can't win in the NFL?

Many of them come from big schools with great coaches and NFL talent surrounding them to make them look so good.

Too many quality QBs without the IT factor who can win in the NFL get overshadowed or overlooked. It takes them winning multiple championships to get respect while these "IT gene" QBs get blown up and flame out.

I measure these QBs. If I went with QBs I enjoyed watching, I'd miss often.

This happens in the NFL. People over-sensationalize the draft, combine, Heisman QBs, and big school QBs. I'll give you the 1994 draft for starters. 9 QBs were drafted with 2 in the first round. That draft was deep in talent, but none of those QBs should have been drafted in the early rounds. There were 12 QBs that could win in the NFL.

By your reasoning, this would have been false. You would have said that Jay Fiedler, Kurt Warner, Jeff Garcia, Marvin Graves, and Jeff Brohm couldn't even make an NFL roster as they developed and succeeded in developmental leagues.

All of them were able to play in the NFL and win. Heath Shuler couldn't even succeed in a developmental league. Dilfer was a 1st round disappointment. He should have been drafted in the 3rd round at best. No better than a Mark Rypien or Brad Johnson.

This happens 2 to 3 drafts per decade. No troll. Reality. It was bad before but the 1st round QB overreach has gotten out of control in the past 15 seasons.

As for drafts that produce very little in the 1st round, the 2021 draft continues to shape up to be that draft. Pederson could do more with Nick Foles than he can with Lawrence. The other 4 are all flaming out while racking up the most losses of any 1st round group. 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 were 4 straight drafts with overrated 1st round QBs that wasted our time. 2011 had 4 QBs with only 1 worth drafting and he only lasted 8 seasons. 2007, 2006, 2002, and 2000 were all bust years for 1st round QBs. 1997, 1996, 1994, 1992, 1991, and 1990 were all bust years for 1st round QBs in the 90s. You can expect 4 to 6 drafts per decade to be loaded with 1st round busts at QB that will never amount to anything more than your average undrafted QB can accomplish.

History has proven that this is reality. What isn't reality is thinking that not all 1st round QBs can bust from a single NFL draft, or thinking that 6th rounders to undrafted QBs in a single draft class can't be loaded with NFL starting level QBs who win more than #1 combine warrior picks.

it's a tough situation for Corral. usually, leftover projects from the previous regime at QB are escorted pretty quickly away.

In Panthers history, not sure that is true.  Fox hung on to Weinke for several years, and Rivera hung on to Clausen for a year or two.

I think Corral will get a shot to see what he can do, but I agree the odds are against him.  Although in fairness, the odds are against almost any NFL draft pick.

He doesn't have the elite athletic ability that someone like AR does, nor the arm strength. Definitely doesn't have Young's high level intangibles or field vision. He is a pretty good mix of above average abilities physically.

His biggest issue is going to be the learning curve to learning an NFL offense. He isn't going to be able to use that RPO/Air Raidish style in the NFL and specifically run the ball as often as he did in college. His best years in college he was rushing the ball 100+ times. He isn't built for that or athletic enough for that kind of usage rate. So he has to really reinvent himself at this level. That's not a small undertaking. If it does succeed, it will take take.

And the deck is stacked even more the lower you get drafted. It shouldn't always work like that but in the real world it definitely does. Like anything else, the NFL is far from a completely merit based system.

It's a long climb from being a QB 3rd round draft pick to a starter. You gotta have a FO and coaching staff that really believes in you and you really have to dazzle in the offseason. Unfortunately he had neither of those last offseason.

Let’s not pretend like moving up to the mid 3rd to acquire a QB is some insanely high compliment. They were definitely intrigued by him, but if they thought he was a franchise guy the move would have happened a lot sooner. They gave up what a 4th comp and future 3rd for the trade? Corral has some potential, but our staff isn’t heavily invested in him which is why they are probably scouting QBs again for an early pick.

.....that said....unlike the Corral acolytes, I am not banking the 2023 season on a lump of clay.

The Corral fan club here is greatly exaggerated. No one's saying crown the guy (maybe rippadonn, but I think he's just having fun with y'all now), we're responding to the fans who act like we've seen enough of him to draw conclusions already.

It's not as big of a crowd as the Darnold fanboys. There are just a few Corral fanboys.
