Carr exploring options

From an article about what Carr and Reich may have looked like in Indy in 2022 (written last year):

Having said that, I'd have mixed feelings about him coming to Carolina.  Derek isn't ready to play second fiddle or sign a short term contract.  He is likely looking for what he's never had with the Raiders organization, a stable coaching staff and a top ten defense. 

The Panthers look like they can offer Carr all that this coming season.  I just don't know if Reich or Tepper are prepared to pass up an opportunity to draft the team's next franchise QB and hand the reign's over to Carr for the next several years.  

I've brought it up before, but when Fitt was in Seattle, they had signed Matt Flynn to that big contract to come in and be the starter and ended up drafting and starting Russell Wilson.  So, I think it's fine to do both, planning for the future but living in the present.

True.  However, hardly anyone, other than maybe Wilson, had any expectations that he would be the starting QB in Seattle that year.  Carr is in a unique situation of being able to choose his team a month prior to any other free agent QB.   I suspect he isn't interested in playing second fiddle to a rookie either.  The teams that will likely be most interested in his services will be out of the running for the top QB prospects in the draft.  Having said that, there could be another rookie QB like Wilson in the third round hoping to surprise his NFL team and knock Derek off his perch.  Time will tell, but I doubt the Panthers will be involved.

I mean, Carr hasn't been a top 5 QB but I think it's pretty unfair to compare the guy to Darnold or Baker etc.  He was doing pretty well with the Raiders considering what he had to work with for years.  He's older but we are in a league where QBs are playing in their late 30's.  He's also been pretty healthy as well.  Not to mention he's one of the best 4th quarter comeback QBs in the history of the league.

I'm fine with Carr, but not at the price I think he will command.  My answer might be different if I thought the only thing separating us from playing for an Owl was a QB, but I don't believe that.  The QB is probably what is preventing us from having a realistic shot at the playoffs, but when I look at last night's game, we don't have that level of firepower, at least that we know of.

Granted, part of that comparison is the fact that we have not had a coaching staff like either of those teams in, well, ever.  We'll see what Reich thinks of and can do with our roster.

I feel the same way about Lamar.  If he were to become available tomorrow, the cost would be crippling.

Both those guys, to varying degrees, are for teams that are close and need to get over the hump.  We are still climbing the hill.  I think we need a vet to carry the baton for a while, but it is a baton to be handed off, not a torch to be carried to the final goal. 

Others think we are closer to the promised land than I do, I'm sure.

I agree, however Franks age does make me a little hesitant on that.

We don't know what Carr wants, is he financially motivated?  I wouldn't be, but that's just me.  Does he want a shot at a Lombardi?  Does he want some stability and a normal place to raise a family?

Put me in his shoes, and Carolina would look very interesting to me.  I'd probably want a 2 year guaranteed deal, so I could hit the market one more time prior to hitting 33/34.

I actually could see us being somewhat attractive to both Carr and Rodgers, and I don't think that either would give two shits if we took a QB in the first after signing them.

Bucs make sense. Which, on the one hand, ouch. I hate the idea of Carr hurling it to Mike Evans for the next 3 years. On the other hand, it mean's there's one less QB-hungry team on draft day.

Carr's motivation is certainly a huge factor.  And it is hard to predict, since he has made a decent truckload of money thus far but has played is career on a clusterf*#k of a team/organization, and feels dumped on by that same organization.

The latter may making him more sensitive to us drafting a QB high, who knows?  I do think there will be a minor bidding war for him since there are a ton of QB starved teams.  But, looking at the staff we are assembling and where we are in the building process, we do certainly pass the sniff test for somebody in his position.

He's got a prior relationship with one of those former defensive coordinators (Dennis Allen).
