Sorry, I don’t agree. SF had a ton of injuries last year and still made the championship game. They were a deep team. Cincy max the championship with multiple backup OL.

What do you think our OL would have been like if Corbett and BC are out for the season week 2? What if Iky and Moron miss significant time?

This isn’t turnover. Our backups are bottom tier, easily. We have some talented players but we have gaping depth holes. If Brown went down, how’s our 3-4 DL?

Had we lost Brown, Burns, or Shaq for any length of time....shew.

We have no idea what the depth of this team will be until after FA and draft.... every team lacks depth late february in the NFL..... there is no argument that can change that.

The part that worries me.  I hope Reich doesn't try to buy his way to a winning record next year and get impatient like Rhule did.  Our cap for 2024 is in great shape, let's not screw that up for immediate gratification.

As long as we are competitive and hover around the .500 mark, I would call that a success for a first-year staff.

Sure, if we hit on every move, our depth is solid but that’s a brilliant off season and we clearly haven’t had that in many moons. We start the off season with very much below average depth. That’s not deniable.

How about offensive line last year though? Did we not hit on that? If I am not mistaken we had 8 different offensive lineman play snaps last year.

Rewinding to 1 year ago today... we are bitching about how paper thing and awful our line is... now we are not even worried about it heading into next season.

That is a perfect example of how the NFL works.... Take the Eagles... last year they couldnt get to the QB, and then this year they go get defensive line talent and have the deepest dline in the NFL.  Then next week... the Eagles only have 3 of those dlineman under contract and it is going to be a position of need again.

My closing argument is that right now .... in the month Feb... every team can say "our team lacks depth" and it be true.

We need a 0 and a 5 minimum this offseason most likely 2 of them each.

Yep, a minimum of four new DL that fits this scheme.  Starters and key backups. Considering how often D-linemen rotate out, you don't want a significant drop off in talent.  So just acquiring a NT with another DE opposite Brown and calling it a day won't exactly cut it.

Any time you transition to a new defense, everyone is going to be an unknown factor. What we saw of Barno in his last 2 games was very encouraging, especially the final game of the year against the Saints where he had 3 tackles and sack.

It just takes good coaches and systems to unleash the talent of our players...  this was Barno's RAS:

As I said before.... in Evero's system... I am really excited to see what he can do with Barno.

A more important ingredient in unleashing a player's talent is HEART!!!

A lot of guys are lacking.

Roy and YGM seem like misfits in this system.  Roy got bullied as a 3-tech, won't hold up as a NT.  YGM is undersized for a 3-4 end and not fast enough to be a OLB.

I'd re-sign Anderson to be an end.  Luckily, our undersized DEs in a 4-3 are now perfect OLBs in a 3-4.  I wouldn't mind hanging on to Haynes now.  He was strictly a one down player in a 4-3.

We really have to beef up our DL now.  There was a need for some upgrade/depth in the 4-3 scheme, more so now even with one less linemen; we still need players here for the schematic fit.

I was purely wanting to focus on offense this off season with a tweak to the defense.  I like the Evero hire, but it made our needs on defense increase.  Given our cap and limited draft picks, this is going to be a tough task.

Re-signing Ionnidis and having him play DE

We’re gonna need a true NT Roy and McCall won’t hold up

Yeah, if we can rip up that old BS contract of his and get actual play out of him at a reasonable price.  Do you realize we are paying him a total of $10M in voided years through 2025?

The OL <> the team and do you know for a fact that Bozeman will re-sign, how Corbett will be coming off of a late ACL injury and BC with a broken ankle? See how depth matters? We got lucky that out 5 starters were healthy almost all year. Remember 2016 when we got down to our 3rd C, had Turner miss games and had to move Remmers to LT?

Again, starters <> depth. We have starter holes that we are going to try to fill. I’m talking about the fact that our backups are not deep and solid. If we have more injuries than last year we would have a lot of trouble.

Also, I think you are 100% wrong that every team says their depth in February is in trouble. We aren’t talking about filling out the roster/losing a couple FAs. You are equating having your roster filled out to actually having quality backups where you are still a playoff team even if you lose key players to injury. We can fill out our roster and maybe even get a few starters, but we cannot fix the quality of our depth issue this offseason. The teams you think we aren’t far from do not have that issue.

We are going in circles here because we are agreement-fighting. You are just stating in a different way. So lets just call it.

I really hope Evero changes his scheme to fit the players aka 4-3/4-2-5. He’d have to entirely gut the defensive core we have and rebuild to be effective at all, which would at least a season.

You don't hire a coach and tell them to change their system.

If we wanted a 4-3 Defensive coach we would have hired one.

But I would also argue that teams don't just sign and acquire all talented depth...  the best teams are absolutely masterful in developing their players that become reliable, dependable depth.  I argue that our biggest issue over the last decade or so, is we had coaches who filled out the bottom of the roster with teacher's pets kind of guys, rather than legitimate NFL players, and it's hard to develop those guys into dependable, reliable depth when most of them shouldn't even be on an NFL roster.  My hope is, with the hire of Reich, the new regime, and a shift back to a more traditional balance of power with the GM having actual final say on the roster, we may finally be able to function like a consistent top-tier NFL franchise for the first time ever.

Also, your DL example proves my point for Philly. In 2022, the only DL added was Reddick. Graham basically missed all of 2021 and Cox, Sweat and Hargrave all improved in 2022 when Reddick arrived. Philly did not overhaul their DL in 2022, they added 1 player, but their lack of depth hurt them in 2021 when Graham went down.

The Eagles signed:

Linvall Joseph
Ndamukong Suh
Hasaan Reddick

Then had 2 players come back from injury:

Jordan Davis
Brandon Graham

That supports what I am saying... this time last year their dline was in dissaray... wtf man.  I respect you but you are on one right now, and I dont want to indulge this anymore.

    • Yeah ik i just put that up for the w-l total
    • That order is wrong. That’s based on standings, not on SOS (lower the better). We are 8th right now on Tankathon but the bye weeks mess it up a bit. We have the 2nd lowest SOS among the 3 win teams so we are basically 6th if we don’t win again. It will be tonight to get by NE who has 3 wins with a lower SOS and a tough schedule. The nice thing is that the four 2 win teams play a bunch of games with each other. Jax plays Tennessee twice and Jax also plays both the Raiders and the Giants. The Giants also play Dallas. Only Jax has a lower SOS so it would benefit us if Jax loses out. We’d then likely be 3rd unless NE squeezes one out maybe Buffalo week 18 will rest starters. If we can stay at 3 wins, doable aside from the Cowboys, we will have a good pick. It would be nice if we can hop over the Giants and Raiders. I’m not a huge fan of this year’s QBs so it would be nice to stock some more picks for a trade up.
    • Jacksonville Dallas and Tennessee should win at least 2 more.  Raiders and giants should win 1 at least 1 more. I really hope the Jets and grandpa rodgers can steal 1 somewhere.
