Saints defense wasn't as good as they'd hoped last season.

I’m just looking purely at stats and I know that doesn’t tell the whole story, but their pass defense was tied for 3rd in passing TD’s allowed and 2nd in passing yards allowed. As the co-defensive coordinator/ secondary coach that looks pretty good to me.

Valid point. Was wondering the same thing. He was a DC for 2 years in Seattle but mostly a defensive assistant or DB coach since until his gig with Saints.

And that whole time (including the 3 he was D.C) they had a very good pass defense.

Plus his time in Dallas as a secondary coach they performed well too!

You can sort the stats on various websites and for a quicker run down you can check out his bio while it’s still up on the saints site. https://www.neworleanssaints.com/team/coaches-roster/kris-richard

I didn't say it made sense 😄

Honestly it could just be that Dennis Allen wants to move on from some of Payton's holdovers and put his own stamp on the staff.

Could be. But as a secondary specialist he’s got one hell of a track record. Again I’m going purely based off stats(because I don’t have a better way to judge him base on the resources available)maybe it’s coincidental based on the rosters he coached having talent but they all seemed better with him than without him.

He will either land somewhere quickly or he must have some type of character trait that is so toxic teams are willing to sacrifice his talent for peace of mind would be my best guess but not nice to assume I suppose.

Coaches hire their coordinators in a normal NFL environment. It's idiotic to interview guys for coordinator positions before you hire a head coach. Period.

Interviewing coordinators isn’t the same as hiring them. There’s nothing wrong with a team doing legwork to help a coach with options beyond their own network. It expands options and if there’s overlap with guys the coach knows/likes that’s a great sign to be on the same page. Lots of teams are doing this now and it makes sense to try and avoid people like Phil Snow or lesser coaches who have just been friends with the head coach forever. Think of Richard rogers with Ron. Being proactive isn’t idiotic.

As much as I love Kris Richard, I keep coming back to John Butler with the Bills.  He's been there for 5 years a defensive backs coach. Here's where the bills have ranked in passing yards and passing TD's allowed since he got there.

2018,1ST in passing yards allowed  and 11th in TD's allowed

2019, 4th and 2nd

2020, 13th and 9th

2021,1st and 1st

2022, 9th and 9th.

Conversely when you look at stopping the run, nobody has done a better job than the Ravens over the last few years. They have had some turnover defensively so hard to pin on 1 guy, but their D-line/assistant head coach Anthony Weaver seems like he's played he big role since getting their in 2021.

That being said he had a 1 year run as defensive coordinator in Houston in 2020 and it didn't pan out well.

It doesn't do poo other than make it awkward for a HC to hire the guys that HE wants to hire. You shouldn't be hiring a guy at HC if you think he needs help choosing his coordinators. It's just dumb. If you think a guy can't handle hiring his own coordinators then he should NOT be your HC.

Not saying no to Ricard but keep in mind he was DC for a team that lost to the Panthers

twice.

True but he wasn't the play caller. They also held Darnold to 43 yards passing in the last game and only put up 10 total points.

In the other game, our defense won that one with 2 defensive TD's, plus wescored one flukey passing TD, the one where Shenault busted a long YAC.

Those games I would not consider an indictment against him.

Context really puts things into perspective
