It's an interesting question. I think the route to the playoffs is a lot harder in the AFC than it is in the NFC:

Chiefs / Bengals / Bills seem to be the upper echelon

Chargers / Dolphins / Ravens / Jaguars seem to be solid playoff contenders (pending Tua and Lamar situations)

You can't ever count the Pats and Steelers out. The Jets with a vet like Carr / Garoppolo / Rodgers could absolutely be right there with that defense. 

And that's not including teams like the Browns (if Watson plays to his potential), the Raiders (what if they land Brady?), and the Titans (Vrabel always seems to have his teams in playoff contention).

It's a brutal conference.

They really don't. To jump from 29 all the way to the top 5 is going to take a ton of capital. The 49ers traded 3 1sts and a 3rd to go from 12 to 3 to get Lance. To go from 29 into the top 5 is going to take way more than that.

If not for the division, Id say its 50-50....but man its a tough deal each year with 4 games against elite QB play.
