we need too much help to give up both 2nds. I want John Michael Schmitz if we don't resign Bozeman. Also I love Drew Sanders and he has played both LB spots. Wilson and Shaq are both on the last year of their contract so he could be a long term solution to one of those spots. Downs because go Tarheels. Also got to think this could be last year of YGM so could use a true run stopping DE at some point or a true Free Safety if they ever figure out what to do with Chinn.

TEs are almost universally poor value in the 1st for multiple reasons. A) Positionally undervalued. A top 10 TE isn't going to cost the big money that most other positions will so you lose surplus value on your rookie contract. B) They generally take a few years to fully develop. There's a reason Chicago gave up Olsen for a 3rd. He was averaging about 500 yards per year his 4 years in Chicago. His 1st 1000 yard year was in season 8. You have to expect their best years are going to be after their rookie contract is up unless you hit a generational talent which you can never count on.

Sure I can. I’ve looked into it. You’re assuming a fantasy draft where every player in the nfl is available in the same draft. That’s not reality. 
 

In reality, there are an average of 1-2 TEs worthy of being drafted in the 1st, mostly towards the end of that round. Now those TEs are often missed in the evaluation process and drop in the actual draft, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t worthy of a 1st round selection. Just means the scouts missed them.

We have #s 39 and 60 in the second. A guy that’s been mentioned around here some that I’m enamored with is Michael Mayer. The chances are pretty low he’ll be available at 39 so I was thinking about the idea of trading up to the mid 20s with our two second round picks. What do you guys think?  Would our two seconds be enough to go high enough to get him?  Some mocks I’ve seen him as high as 15 but most are in the 25-28 range.  Would you love that move or just really like it?  I’d love it.

What if some team falls in love and takes him in the top ten or so, what about trading our second and a third or something to move up to 30 or 31 for the second TE?  I’ve been thinking we’re primed to move up from 39 into the bottom of the first to take someone that could make an immediate impact, like a blue chip TE. Is there anyone you guys would wanna make that move for if Mayer is gone?

If we ended up with a possible franchise QB and Mayer in a move up I would be overwhelmed with joy.  Hell yes on that.

I like a few TEs in the second, Washington, Kincaid, Musgraves all have serious potential.

If we do go QB at 9 a TE and a receiver in the second would be nice imo. I'm not super high on the FA class for WR and it would be nice to get the young QB another couple young targets to grow with.

What tight ends in the last couple of drafts have been worthy of a first round selection?

That has been my primary target in the 2nd round for a while now. Would be a big pickup for our LB unit…and have a respectable core that we’ve lacked since Luke retired.

Washington is too talented to fail imo.

 

A guy that size and that athletic could become a major threat with the right coaching.

 

If nothing else he has shown you he is the best blocking TE in this draft. He would help our run game even more. I honestly see no downside with Darnell Washington.

Mayer wasn't even the best TE in college football. The generational TE is in Georgia. Brock Bowers.

 

Mayer is good but he's not generational imo.

 

Pitts was supposed to be generational and he hasn't looked all that great as of yet.

Really depends on what we get at 9. I'm all in on finding a starting TE in the 1st or 2nd for sure (Mayer / Kincaid). There are some other skill players like Gibbs or Robinson I'd like. Or a LB that can start day one.
